i LIGHT International, 21 June 1962 "Flight International" photographs 971 Nicholas Goodhart Declared Champion at Aston Down The National Gliding Championships BY KENNETH OWEN Nicholas Goodhart (Olympia 419 No 75) and crew ON the wall of the 17th century market house in the village of Minchinhampton, Gloucestershire, is a notice which warns: "No Swing Show or Booth for the purpose of public Amusement will be Suffered to be Erected upon the Manorial Ground without the consent of the Lord of the Manor and then in such a Situation and at such a Charge as may be agreed upon. The Crier to be paid for each Crying not exceeding £0 0s 6d." A mile or so down the road, one show which went with a swing, amazed if not amused the public, and had no cause for crying was the 1962 National Gliding Championships at RAF Aston Down which, for the ten days ending on Whit Monday, added a stream of glider trailers and retrieving cars to the normal traffic of cattle, horses and golfers across Minchinhampton Common. The new national champion, Capt Nicholas Goodhart RN, who is Assistant Director, Guided Weapons (Naval) at the Ministry of Aviation, had flown consistently well throughout the championships. His previous gliding achievements include second place in the open class at the 1958 world championships; fourth open-class place at the 1960 world championships', winner, with the late Frank Foster, of the two-seater class at the 1956 world championships; and League 1 runner-up at the 1957 and 1959 nationals. Goodhart had taken over the overall League 1 lead from John Williamson on the third contest day, and retained it with an in creasing margin to the end. As the list of platings overleaf shows, he was daily winner on four occasions, second on three occasions, and fourth on one occasion. Philip Wills was on top form—which is saying quite a lot—throughout the contest; Deane-Drummond was in his accustomed place among the leaders; and these veterans had 19i6]a NATIONAL GLIDING CHAMPIONSHIPS!
