BENTWATERS' MACH 2 VISITORS TWO McDonnell F-110A Phantom lis, on a demon stration tour of Europe, came into RAF Bentwatere on Wednesday of last week. There they were prac tically on McDonnell territory, for the resident 81st Tactical Fighter Wing operates F-101 Voodoos. The Phantoms were subsequently visiting Coltishall and Farnborough. This was not the first time Phantoms had been seen in the UK, for last year (Flight, June 15,1961) an F4H-1 visited RNAS Yeovilton and RAE Bedford from the Paris Show, with an A3J-1 Vigilante; but it is the first visit since the big USAF order for F-110s was announced The F-110As, pictured here, flew in from Ram- stein, Germany. There they had given about 25 demonstration rides, having previously been to Norway and Denmark, and they are going on to Rome and Paris before returning to the US. (They made the eastward crossing, from Langley AFB to Wiesbaden, in 8hr 23min, with two in-flight refuel- lings. An extended probe can be seen in the top right-hand picture.) Flying the F-110s, loaned to the USAF by the US Navy, were one USAF and three McDonnell pilots: Lt Col R. C. Allen; W. F. Ross, I. R. Burrows; and—seen at right—G. R. Eaton.
