FLIGHT International, 21 June 1962 974-975 over Bentwaters and a formation touch-and-go that impressively depicted low-speed handling qualities, col Allen and Mr Hal Evans—McDonnell represen tative who flew in by C-130—talked about the USAF order. This Tactical Air Command order is for "several hundred" aircraft—the total may exceed a thousand, if Air Defense Command also order— for close support, supplementing the F-105s. The -110s will carry two pilots, they will have larger wheels than the Navy's Phantoms, and cartridge starting. The first are due to be delivered in the autumn of 1963. Looked at from any aspect, the F-110 is an im pressive aeroplane. To quote Flight of June 15 last: "Its two General Electric J79-2 or -8 engines confer a top speed in the M2.4 range. Armament comprises six Sparrow 3 missiles, a large number of Sidewinders, or nuclear or conventional attack weapons; and extremely comprehensive detection, tracking and guidance equipment is installed." The F-110 has a resounding list of records to its credit. •.'• -'-••'• •' ,•:•-•;"'•.••.•: . •':•'•;/;/ .: ' :• • • : •••.•..••.. : • :• • .• . ••.. •;.,; . '. ,. "..:•: ':.:• •;,: •..;.;• ......
