FLIGHT International, 28 June 1962 1009 Statistics published by the Society of British Aircraft Constructors indicate that the exports of the British aircraft industry are chiefly exports of engines. Last year, for example, the latter accounted for £83m, in comparison with aggregate aircraft sales of £58.8m. Engines were never more important, and on this and the following 17 pages the Technical Editor reviews the work of the world's major companies engaged in their manufacture. Data for all the principal types of engine are tabulated on pages 1025 and 1026 Pratt & Whitney JS7 on test with afterburner Australia CAC Commonwealth Aircraft Corporation, Melbourne. This com pany is not in production with new engines, but is providing service support for Nene and Avon turbojets built by them under R-R licence; tooling up to manufacture the French SNECMA Atar 9C turbojet (q.v.) is proceeding according to plan. Belgium FN Fabrique Nationale a"Amies de Guerre, Herstal-lez-Liige. This renowned arms company manufactured 1,000 Rolls-Royce Derwent turbojets between 1948 and 1954, followed by 300 Avon 113s and a larger number of Avon 203s. Since the beginning of 1959 they have overhauled and repaired Avons, Marbores and Orendas of the Belgian Air Force. FN are now in production with the compressor rotor, combustor and complete turbine section of the J79-11A turbojet for the European F-104G programme, and will share in NATO orders for the Rolls-Royce Tyne turboprop. Canada CANADIAN PRATT & WHITNEY Canadian Pratt & Whitney Aircraft Co Ltd, Jacques Cartier, Quebec. A subsidiary of United Aircraft, CP&WA manufactures, sells and services products of the various US divisions, and is the sole factory source for a wide range of Pratt & Whitney piston-engine spares which are sold in 70 countries. In recent years the company have made some hundreds of Wright R-1820 piston engines for the Canadian CS2F programme, designed the parent firm's JT12 turbojet (q.v.) and manufactured the accessory gearboxes for CL-44 aircraft, as well as overhauling the Wright R-1300 and R-1820, Napier Eland 504 and all Pratt & Whitney engines used in Canada. PT6 (T74) The first shaft turbine designed in Canada, the PT6 is being developed for light to medium aircraft, helicopters and marine craft. The principal market is regarded as a commercial one, but development is now being assisted by the US Navy and military appli cations should materialize. The power section has a rear circum ferential intake and front exhaust, which in the PT6A turboprop version simplifies the drive from the free power turbine through the reduction gear turning the output shaft at up to 2,200 r.p.m. The turboshaft PT6B has only a single stage of gearing, maintaining the output at a constant 6,230 r.p.m. Detail design began early in 1959, the first engine ran in February 1960 and total bench time is now about 3,900hr. A PT6A has exceeded the brochure performance during flight at up to 25,000ft in the nose of a Beech 18. The PT6B is already flying in two new helicopters, the Hiller Ten99 and Piasecki 16H. A YT74 has completed a 50hr PFRT to Navy BuWeps standards, and the alcohol-spray anti-icing has been proved at the NRC in Ottawa. A marine version has been chosen to power a fast naval craft by Kongsberg Vapenfabrikk of Norway. ORENDA A. V. Roe Canada Ltd, Orenda Engines Division, Toronto, Ontario. Having established themselves as a major engine builder by delivering 3,794 of their own Orenda turbojet, this company provides service support and spares for these powerplants in service in foul- continents. No aircraft engines are being made to the company's own design, but substantial business has resulted from the award of contracts to manufacture, under licence from General Electric (q.v.), the J79-7 to power the CF-104 and J85-7 to power the production CL-41 trainer. The J79-OEL-7 has been flowing steadily from the Toronto factory since January 1961, the first J85 is due off the line next year and Orenda will support both engines in service. Several types of industrial gas turbine are currently being developed. Czechoslovakia OMNIPOL Omnipol, Washingtonova 11, Prague 3. Still in limited production, the 105 h.p. Walter Minor 4-III has been so developed that its overhaul life is l,000hr and the take-off rating is approved for continuous operation. The 160 h.p. Minor 6-HI utilizes many similar components. Powerplant of the Meta-Sokol is the 140 h.p. Walter M 332, with supercharger and direct injection. The six-cylinder M 337 powers the Morava L-200A. France HISPANO SUIZA Societe d'Exploitation des Materiels Hispano Suiza, Bois-Colombes, Seine. Apart from other activities, Hispano Suiza are providing service support for some 1,600 Verdon, Tay and Nene turbojets made under Rolls-Royce licence, are in production with the SEPR 8-41 rocket pack (q.v.) for Mirage III aircraft for the Armee de l'Air and export, and are tooling up to share in the Rolls- Royce Tyne NATO programme. Hispano Suiza, who celebrated their 50th anniversary earlier this month, are the largest of the four partners in the Tyne programme, their share amounting to some 44 per cent of the total. The first production engines from this international pro gramme are scheduled for delivery early in 1964. POTEZ Societe' des Avions et Moteurs Henry Potez, 46 Avenue Kleber, Paris 16. Although feeling the effects of the Rolls-Royce licence for Continental engines, Potez are already achieving success with their new range of horizontally opposed engines. 4E Certificated by the FAA in March 1960, this attractive flat-four is available in two versions. The 4E 00 is rated at 90 h.p. at 2,550 r.p.m. on 80/87 fuel, and the 4E 20 has the higher rating given in data table 5. A first batch of 200 of the higher-powered version is currently in hand. 6E Prototypes of this six-cylinder version are at present on bench testing (picture overleaf). F
