6 FLIGHT International, 5 July 1962 AIR COMMERCE . . . One of Swissair's seven Convair 990 Coronados. of which two are leased to SAS and Thai Airways International; the fifth and last for Swissair will be delivered in August. It will carry a modification kit to raise the cruising speed by improving the flap and nacelle streamlining INTEGRATION IN MEXICO THE long-awaited consortium of Mexico's three international carriers which the Mexican Government has been planning is about to emerge as a separate entity under the name of Aero Mex or Aero Mexico. It will operate as a leasing company separate from Aeronaves de Mexico, Mexicana and Guest, but operating their aircraft on international routes; the joint fleet will comprise Mexicana's three Comet 4Cs, two of which have been leased to Guest for its Atlantic services, and two new DC-8s ordered by Aeronaves: a third aircraft of this type leased from Eastern was lost in an accident at Jdiewiid on January 18, 1961. Guest's Atlantic services had to be suspended some months ago but will be reopened next year using a DC-8. Aeronaves was due to inaugurate DC-8 services between Mexico City and New York on July 1. The Mexican Government has put up SlOm in cash for a 50 per cent interest in Aero Mex, and some of this money will be used to finance the purchase of the two DC-8s. Mexicana will have a 25 per cent holding in the new company, Aeronaves 15 per cent and Guest 10 per cent. The three airlines have been in poor finan cial health recently, with strikes and the inability to finance new jet equipment; de Havilland recently had to obtain a court order in Mexico to secure priority to Mexicana's assets as a result of the airline's non-payment of Comet instalments. BUA's HOVERCRAFT PLANS MATURE NOW that Wallasey has given what British United Airways de scribe as "its wholehearted approval" to becoming the Wirral terminal of BUA's Vickers VA-3 Hovercraft service across the Dee estuary, final plans are being made for the service due to start on July 20. Over 2,000 bookings have already been taken, which seems to augur well for the commercial baptism of the air-cushion vehicle. Schedules have now been prepared and tickets are being printed. The service will end on September 16, and control centres- cum-booking offices will be established at both Rhyl and Wallasey. The VA-3 will be based and serviced at Rhyl, but will be refuelled at Wallasey between trips. The original proposed terminal at Hoy- lake, adjacent to Wallasey, was abandoned because some residents made objections on the score of noise. Carrying a maximum of 24 passengers, the VA-3 will make the 15-mile crossing of the estuary in 25min and there will be six services every day of the week except Tuesday. At the foot of this page are reproduced BUA's schedules for the service—the world's first ACV timetable to be published. NEW BRITISH AIR TAXI SERVICE TWO well-known names in British independent air transport. M. H. Curtis and L. B. Greensted, are returning to active airline- type operations, having formed a new company—named Contract and General Aviation Ltd—to provide an air taxi service with Aero Commanders from London's airports. The company's policy is to operate to full airline and Ministry standards with the maximum of safety and economy. CGA is a member of the Flight Safety Foundation and already holds an Air Operator's Certificate, while the Aero Commander is, of course, widely used as a business aircraft both in the States and in Europe; it currently holds the first award in the twin-engined class gained at the Royal Aero Club's International Business and Touring Aircraft Competition. A 24-hour service is envisaged, appealing especially to those requiring fast travel with individual attention to personal require- HOVERCRAFT SCHEDULE, FRIDAY JULY 20—SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 16 VA-3 ff! 09.30 a.m. 09.55 a.m. VA-3 Daily Excepc Tuesday 1 l.00a.m.| 11.25 a.m. VA-3 Daily Excepc Tuesday 12.30 p.m. 12.55 p.m. VA-3 Daily Excepc Tuesday 3.00 p.m. 3.25 p.m. VA-3 Daily Excepc Tuesday 4.30 p.m. 4.55 p.m. VA-3 Daily Except Tuesday 6.00 p.m. 6.25 p.m. HOVERCOACH-TYPE Days of Operation Dep.
