Pratt & Whitney JFTD 12s WORLD E W S Ministerial Changes In the large-scale ministerial reshuffle announced by the Prime Minister on July 13, Mr Harold Watkinson. Minister of Defence since October 1959, becomes a back-bencher. He is replaced by Mr Peter Thorneycroft, previously Minister of Avia tion. The new Minister of Aviation is Mr Julian Amery, who is succeeded as Air Minister by Mr Hugh Fraser. French Aviation Policy Details of French Government aero nautical policy were given last week by M Pierre Messmer, the Minister of National Defence. He said that the principle of a new annual military programme had now been definitely adopted. Two generations of weapon systems had been determined: a Mirage IV phase, with nuclear weapons, to go into service in accordance with con tractual schedules; then around 1969-70, a thermonuclear armament carried either by submarines or by flying platforms. A launcher platform based upon the super sonic Super Caravelle was now being studied. M Messmer added that the decision to manufacture six pre-series Super-Frelon helicopters—three in France and three in Germany, under a Franco-German pro gramme of co-operation—would soon become definite; large-scale production would begin "around 1964," and 600 might te manufactured. The Minister also con- ftmsd increasing interest in civil and military air transport for the future. The Government had been requested to increase the number of Caravelles scheduled for production to 200. Franco-British discus sions, he said, were still going on concerning the Super Caravelle project. Change at Sud Gen Andre Puget. formerly chief of staff for French national defence, was last week nominated as president and director- general of Sud-Aviation. He succeeds M Georges Hereil, who resigned recently over differences with the French Govern ment about the supersonic airliner study project between Sud and BAC. Another new appointment which, like Gen Pugefs, seems to indicate a change in France's attitude towards the supersonic airliner project is that of M Dusseauix as Minister of Transport and Public Works. He is not expected to push the project forward to the same extent as his able predecessor, M Buron, who resigned re cently over political differences with Presi dent d; Gaulle. Breguet Atlantic: No Delays An important statement has been made by Louis Breguet about the future of the Breguet Atlantic, saying that "a wrong interpretation of certain articles of the addenda to the budget" discussed by the finance and defence committees of the French Parliament "had been the origin of misleading information concerning delays, reductions and even cancellation of the Ereguet Atlantic programme." Breguet say they wish to confirm that Multi-mission Mock-up at Chadderton. This engineering replica of the fuselage of the Avn 748MF close-support and assault transport (which is described an pages 81 and 82) is currently be ing used to prove the design of the rear loading doors
