Flight International, 19 July 1962 Air-Cushion Vehicles Supplement Going ashore at Osborne Bay Progress Report on SR.N2 A change from the tube effect BY THE TIME THIS ISSUE Went to press the Saunders Roe SR.N2 had logged a total operating time of over llOhr. A maximum speed of 73kt (83.5 m.p.h.) had been attained at an all-up weight of 19 tons. Normal outer skirt clearance at cruising speed was 9in and total rise height 29in. The craft had been ditched at a speed of approximately 55kt. The maximum sea state which had been encountered was 4ft-5ft waves at speeds of 40kt-45kt although the sea state for maximum continuous opera tion has been 2ft-3ft waves. In all the craft has travelled some 1,200 miles and carried a total of 470 passengers. The makers report that the trans mission has behaved very well and thai it appears to be in excellent condition. Very little trouble has been experienced with the electro-hydraulic system for operating the pylons. Sound proofing has been installed, with a considerable reduction in cabin noise level, and it is hoped to do even better in this respect at a later and appropriate date. The skirts have withstood the early trials well, most of the wear having occurred during tethered hovers on hard standing. Very little wear was reported during sea sorties. Beaching operations have proved very satisfactory. Debris thrown up has been limited to fine sand and pieces of seaweed. Even small stones are only moved a few feet.
