[0248 "/CELESTIAL Navigation for Yachstmen," ?rij ^ Edition, by M. Blewitt. This little book, intended especially for beginners, should receive a very warm welcome from every yachtsman who has wanted to learn the art of navigation by the heavenly bodies, bui has been deterred by its apparent complexity. In particular, it will make an immediate appeal to all who feel their mathematics are not up to standard, for neither geometry nor trigonometry play any part in the author's explanation—indeed, even those who can manage little more than addition and subtraction should master this book with ease! 64 pages. Illustrated with 26 diagrams and graphs. 7s. 6d. net from all booksellers By post 8s. from lliffe BOoks Ltd., Dorset House, Starr- ford Street London, S.E.I. " A BACS or Nomograms," by A. Giet. Translated from A the French by H. D. Phippen and J. W. Head. Most engineers have made use of nomograms at some time in their careers, and are fully alive to the fact that they are a convenient tool when the same formulae have to be solved repeatedly for several sets of variables. It is fair to say, however, that only a small proportion of even those who habitually employ nomograms know how to construe; them for their own use. Most of the comparatively sma.! literature on the subject is written for mathematicians anC is extremely difficult for the practical engineer to compre hend. This book is essentially practical, and not owl demonstrates the many and varied applications of ir.t abac or nomogram, but shows how even those without highly specialized mathematical knowledge may construe: their own charts. 35s. net from all booksellers.
