296 FLIGHT International, 30 August 1962 WORLD E W S RB.162andRB.175 Last week Rolls-Royce Ltd held the first public showing of the RB.162 lift unit, which represents the culmination of ten years of steady development of ever simpler and lighter turbojets specifically intended for the provision of lift for VTOL. The use of glass-reinforced plastics has been the subject of a long-term research programme at Derby, and these materials account for about half the bulk and one- third of the weight of the 162, and make the unit much easier and cheaper to build. These glass-plastic parts have given no trouble whatever during ten months' development running, during which thrusts of well over 4,0001b have been reached. Thrust/weight ratio is expected to rise during the development period from 16:1 to 20:1. The RB.175 is one of several derivatives of the basic RB.162. A free turbine is added to drive a front fan which results in increased thrust, reduced s.f.c. and lower noise; but the greater intake momentum drag makes the 175 more suitable for air craft which can convert to wing-supported flight at relatively low speed. Further details of the RB.162 will be given next week. Indian-Soviet Negotiations No formal announcement has yet been made about Indian purchase and possible licence-manufacture of Soviet Mig fighters in India, but a delegation from the Indian Defence Ministry recently visited the Soviet Union. It was led by Dr S. Bhagavantam, the Ministry's scientific adviser, who was accompanied by AVM Harjinder Singh, AOC IAF Maintenance Command, and Mr M. K. Hariharan, the Ministry's financial adviser. The managing director of Hindustan Aircraft, AVM Ranjan Dutt, preceded the delegation with two test pilots, and the chairman of the company, Mr S. Jayasanker, has also been to Moscow. The delegation's task was to evaluate Migs. Recently the Indian Defence Ministry announced that the IAF team which went to Britain to test the latest version of the Avro 748 had found the aircraft "highly satisfactory." Mr V. K. Krishna Menon, the Defence Minister, stated in the Lok Sabha recently that Soviet engines to power the Hindustan HF-24 were due to be manufactured in India from next year. Mo K at Farnborough Since the SBAC Flying Display and Exhibition is held at the Royal Aircraft Establishment, it follows that the hosts are the Ministry of Aviation. Although not members of the Society, the Ministry take part in the display with static exhibits which illustrate some of the manifold activities carried out at such establishments as the RAE (Farnborough, Bedford and Aber- porth), Rocket Propulsion Establishment, Aeroplane and Armament Experimental Summer Lightnings: Lightnings of 74 Sqn, who with Hunters of 92 Sqn are putting on a synchronized aerobatic display at next week's Farnborough SBAC Show, seen in six-feet-apart formation practice over Norfolk last week ... :-
