Exacting Task A FAMOUS SECOND WORLD WAR bomber pilot, Air Cdre H. I. Edwards, vc, had something to say about his V-force suc cessors at Scampton recently. He defined Bomber Command's present-day task of maintaining peace as "far more exacting" because of modern equipment and today's delicate politics—though probably less exciting than the deeds of valour performed during the war. Air Cdre Edwards was presenting the Medium Bomber Force Efficiency Trophy for 1961 to 83 Sqn, which is based at Scampton with Vulcan B.2s. This trophy has been presented by the No 460 Sqn RAAF Association (this page, August 16) and is awarded for general all-round efficiency. Now Director of Establishments at Air Ministry, Air Cdre Edwards com manded Binbrook when 460 Sqn were stationed there during the war. At the Scampton ceremony he said that efficiency, in the context of the award, included air craft utilization, flight safety records, navigation and bombing results, crew classifications, training requirements and performance, and routine and special opera tion exercises. "The winning squadron has to be thoroughly competent, and must excel in all departments," he said. To 83 Sqn he said: "by winning this trophy you have indicated that the responsibility with which you are charged is in the hands of experts." The squadron was the first Sud Alouette III demonstration at RAAF Fairbairn: left to right, Air Cdre B. A. Eaton, Director- General of Operational Requirements; AVM W. L. Hely, Air Member for Personnel; M. Denif Prost, the pilot; AVM C. T. Hannah, DCAS; AVM E. Hey, Air Member for Technical Services; and Air Cdre W. Garing, AOC South Australia. The helicopter had been flown from France by Norat/as of the French Air Force in Bomber Command to be equipped with Vulcans. NIGHT FLYING by Beverleys of Transport Command from Thorney Island is to be reduced following complaints from local residents. A KITTEN HAS BEEN ADOPTED as mascot by 16 Sqn, based at RAF Laarbruch in Germany, after it had stowed away in one of the squadron's Canberras. THE RAAF S FIRST TWO IROQUOIS HELICOPTERS, which are to equip 9 Sqn, are to arrive in Australia during September. Based at Williamtown, the unit will be commanded by Sqn Ldr R. A. Scott. A 64-PAGE BATTLE OF BRITAIN SOUVENIR BOOK has been produced for the RAF "At Home" day on Saturday, September 15. Minimum price is 2s and all proceeds go to the RAF Benevolent Fund and the RAFA. A JAVELIN CREW of No 5 Sqn, based at RAF Laarbruch in Germany, recently were presented with gifts by the German town of Haldern in recognition of the pilot's staying with his aircraft until the last possible moment before ejection so as to miss a built-up area. The gifts—brandy, champagne, wine, cigars, cigarettes, choco lates and flowers—had been subscribed for by the townsfolk and were brought to the station by the burgermeister and ampts- direktor for the pilot, Fit Lt J. Adam. AVM . R. OORDON-FINLAYSON, Director- General of Personal Services at the Air Ministry, is opening an exhibition called "Fifty Years of Military Flying" at Bur- berrys store, 18 Haymarket, London SW1, on September 10. This has been arranged in co-operation with the Air Ministry. Burberrys made the original RFC uniforms. The exhibition will also include a flight manual of 1910 which belonged to the First World War ace McCudden, and Punch aviation cartoons. It will be open for two weeks.
