FLIGHT International, 30 August 1962 313 BAC 221 programme of recent years for a com pletely new military " combat" aeroplane developed with public money—it has been an annual target of economy- seekers. The original General Opera tional Requirement 339 was modified during 1958 to incorporate important modifications—in particular to the wing and undercarriage—which reduced the length and strength of the runway needed by die TSR2, greatly increased its opera tional flexibility in limited-war operations and in close support of the Army, and could open the way to export sales. The choice of Vickers, assisted by English Electric (later combined into British Air craft Corporation), as prime airframe contractors was announced in January 1959, together with Bristol Siddeley as being responsible for die engine. The latter will be a very advanced supersonic version of die Olympus, giving a tiirust of some 33,0001b with fully variable after burner, and flight testing of this engine started in February witii a special pod mounted beneath a Vulcan.
