316 FLIGHT International, 30 August 1962 Hunting Jet Provost Mk SI determine the optimum methods of pre paring the steel and turning it into an aeroplane. The chief method of jointing is by " puddle welding," a process evolved by Bristol, but new ranges of steel rivets, bolts, screws and special fasteners have also been developed, as well as thermally resistant transparent material for the windscreen. Principal assignment of the two 188 flight aircraft will be the investi gation of kinetic heating problems at speeds of more than 1,500 m.p.h. An other important task will be the flight development of engines and their associ ated variable intakes and nozzles, as well as extensive nutter testing. The first 188 flew on April 14, and has since been based at the Aeroplane and Armament Experimental Establishment at Boscombe Down, Wiltshire. It will be displayed publicly for the first time at Farnborough next week. English Electric Canberra First jet bomber produced in Britain, the Can berra combines outstanding flight per formance with extreme docility, and makes relatively light demands on runway length and strength and on ground sup port equipment. As a result it has found wide acceptance by air forces throughout the world, and more than 400 of an Americanized version were built for the US Air Force Tactical Air Command by Martin. Many hundreds of Canberras for the RAF were manufactured not only by English Electric but also by A. V. Roe, Handley Page and Short Brothers & Harland, the last-named firm being responsible for the complete development and manufacture of the PR.9 high-altitude reconnaissance variant illustrated on page 314 (and also for the U.10 pilotless drone target version). All the Canberras in RAF service are powered by Rolls- Royce Avon turbojets, and British Air craft Corporation are at present engaged in extensive modification programmes aimed at increasing their operational effectiveness. Tactical strike versions, such as the B.8, will next year be equipped with the 1,1251b Nord AS.30 air-to-surface attack missile. English Electric Lightning. Two new marks of this standard RAF intercepter have flown during the past year: the F.3 and T.5. The former is externally dis tinguishable by an enlarged, square-cut fin and is probably powered by the Rolls- Royce Avon 301 giving 13,2301b thrust cold and almost 17,0001b with afterburning. Other changes probably include provision for launching the Red Top missile, ad vanced flight instrumentation, liquid oxygen and steerable nosewheel. The F.1A and F.2 incorporate improvements leading up to this standard. The T.5 is a two-seat trainer with duplicated attack sights and tactical capability, corresponding to the F.3 as does the T.4 to the earlier marks. Each squadron is now receiving one or two T.4s for training and demonstration, although all operational conversion has so far been done solely with preliminary Vickers Vanguard 952
