FLIGHT International, 30 August 1962 319 vantages of the rear-engine formula, in troduced by the French and subsequently adopted for new American transports will not only give the VC10 the edge on air field performance but should also in crease its competitive appeal to passengers. BOAC have 12 standard VClOs and 30 Super VClOs on order, and are planning for full VC10 services in the spring of 1964. British United Airways, Britain's largest independent airline, have two standard VClOs on order; these aircraft will differ from those being built for BOAC in being modified for use in the all-freight role, with an enlarged door measuring 140inX84in. Other freighter developments, the VC10 F-2 for all-freight work and the VC10 CPF-2 for mixed- traffic service, are in hand. Ghana Air ways have three standard VClOs on order, and eleven have been bought for RAF Transport Command, with some of the work subcontracted to Short & Harland. The order book, including the BOAC and BUA orders, now stands at 58 plus 2 options. The Super VC10 and VC10 differ basically in their power and pay load/ range capabilities. The standard aircraft, powered by four Rolls-Royce Conway 540s of 20,3701b thrust, can carry a full payload of some 34,0001b over a range, without full reserves, of some 4,500 miles. The Super VC10, deliveries of which to BOAC will start in October 1964, is powered by four 21,8251b R-R Conway 550s, and can carry 47,0001b some 5,000 miles. Respective maximum weights of the VC10 and Super VC10 are 299,0001b and 322,0001b, and fuel capacities are 17,940 and 19,315 Imp gal. Vickers are examining the possibilities of extending the range performance of the VC10 to enable BOAC to operate the aircraft on stage lengths of some 6,000 miles (e.g., London-Los Angeles). Vickers Viscount Still unchallenged as Britain's most successful airliner, the Vis count (four Rolls-Royce Darts) continues in production, and deliveries against new orders for the 810 version can be ful filled before the end of 1964. A total of 435 of all versions have been sold, and nine aircraft are on the production line at Hurn. All Nippon have bought three of these, and it is believed that six are being built for China.
