I J % -1 • first Indian-assembled aircraft are well advanced. Rolls-Royce Dart 7 engines for these aircraft are being built under licence at the Bangalore factory of Hindustan Aircraft. It is believed that the Indians are studying developments of the 748 for possible manufacture in India, including the 748MF rear-loading mili tary variant being built for the RAF. Among the design studies that have been carried out to widen the appeal of the basic 748 are the 748E with a 6ft in crease in fuselage length and the Super E powered by Dan RDa.lOs. Avro 77S First official reference to this development of the 748 was made last January. Designated 778, the project is based on the same fuselage and wing as the 748, but, in place of the wing-mounted Dan turboprops, it would be powered by rear-mounted turbofans. Avro 780 (748MF) Now in the final design stages at Chadderton, this heavier and more powerful version of the 748 bears the same relation to the civil air liner as does the AW.660 to the AW.650. The most obvious change is the new rear end; the lengthened fuselage incorporates loading doors and a ramp for vehicles and bulky equipment, and to permit air drop ping.
