FLIGHT International, 30 August 1962 333 floor. Rear loading is provided through a full-section door system, and military applications involving air-dropping are being borne in mind. As a passenger transport 15 seats may be installed at 36in pitch. Originally it was believed that such an aircraft should be powered by piston engines, and the selection of the 390 h.p. Continental GTSIO-520 turbocharged flat-six was announced at the start of the project. These engines will now be used only in the first prototype, which is fast approacliing completion and should fly before 1963. The production Skyvan will be the Mk 2, powered by two Bristol Siddeley Turbomeca Astazou 2 turbo-props, each rated at 950 s.h.p. and driv ing 8ft Ratier-Figeac reversing propellers. The extra power allows an increase in gross weight to 11,5001b, and in pay load to 4,5001b; maximum fuel capacity is 1,4001b, giving a range with 3,9001b pay-load of 720 miles, and cruising speed may be varied from 160 to 205 m.p.h. CL-704 Under this designation Lock heed Aircraft have evolved a VTOL development of the F-104G Super Star- fighter which was proposed in conjunc tion with Short Brothers & Harland to meet the NATO BMR-3 specification for a tactical strike and reconnaissance machine. Compared with die original F-104G now in production throughout Europe, the CL-704 would incorporate the following modifications: new wing box beams and tip fillets; wing-tip pods each housing seven Rolls-Royce RB.181 lift units; enlarged air intakes to a Rolls-Royce RB.168R Spey propulsion engine; a bleed-air autostabilization system and appropriate cockpit controls; and addi tional instrumentation. PD.58 Queen Air As British agents for Beech aircraft, Short have proposed to the Ministry of Aviation an anglicized version of the 6/9-seat Beech Queen Air, which in standard form is powered by two 380 h.p. Lycoming engines. Such a machine is required by the RAF for liaison purposes. ; WESTLAND AIRCRAFT LTD Yeovil, Somerset. Yeovil 1100 £13,435,000 11,000 Yeovil: production of Wessex I and 2 and Whirlwind 10; development of Wessex 3 ond other marks; production of spares and service support for Dragonfly. Wessex, Whirlwind and Widgeon; service support and manufacturing licence for Boeing-Vertol 107. Bristol Helicopter Division, Weston-super-Mare, Somerset: conversion of Whirlwind to Mk 10 standard; service support of Belvedere. Fairey Aviation Division, Hayes, Middlesex: production of Scout and Wasp; service support for Gonnet, Scout and Wasp; ferrous precision castings. Normalair Ltd, Yeovil: complete aircraft air-conditioning, pressurlzotlon and oxygen systems. Saunders-Roe Division, East Cowes, Isle of Wight: manufacture of Whirlwind fuselage; research, design, development, manufacture and test of air-cushion vehicles (member of Hovercraft Development Ltd); development and manufacture of Black Knight research vehicle dnd associated electronic equip ment; production of strain-gauges. Westland Engineers, Yeovil: manual and electrically operated doors for airport buildings. ; Belvedere As recorded in an "In the Air" report in Flight International for February 8, the Belvedere, which entered RAF service late last year, was described as "the biggest and most capable heli copter the RAF has yet received—and the fastest and furthest ranging." The report continued, " Single-engined capability is remarkable, and the failure of one engine in forward flight can be detected only by the change in sound and the "splitting" of the twin needles on the torque gauge." Powerplant is two 1,450 s.h.p. Napier Gazelles mounted fore and aft of the main cabin with an interconnecting shaft. For a few minutes following the shut-down of one engine, the power of the other can be automatically increased to 1,650 s.h.p. Controls are fully powered without manual reversion, and instruments and lighting are fitted for blind and night flying. Normal gross weight is 19,0001b. and a 6,0001b load can be carried either inter nally or slung. Typical loads are 19 troops, or a Land-Rover with trailer attached, or a lightweight bridge unit. Fuel is sufficient for four hours at lOOkt, but 120kt is a comfortable cruising soeed. The machine^ is simple and straightforward to fly. the inertia of eneines and rotors com pensating to a considerable extent for lack of constant-speeding control (this feature, and auto stabilization, mav be added later). The RAF has several sauadrons of Belve deres, some of which will be stationed in the Middle and Far East. Westland B-V 107 Last October West- land Aircraft and the Vertol Division of The Boeing Company announced the signing of an agreement in connection with the American company's Model 107 Westland Belvedere HC.I
