They have been developed in close consultation with Vickers in the planning stage, and particular care has been taken throughout to suppress noise. Great attention has also been given to keeping down the overall dimensions. The new thimble blower is believed to be the world's smallest pressure blower. It is 1.6in long by 1.4in diameter, and the performance ranges from 4 cu ft/min at 0.1 in s.w.g. to 1£ cu ft/min at lin s.w.g. It is especially suitable for use with crowded electronic equipment, and is designed for spot cooling. Another type takes up less than one- third of the space usually occupied by one of its capacity—less than 160 cu in instead of some 600 cu in. It has six axial stages, and the impellers are mounted on the rotating stator sleeve of the inside-out motor. Design performance is 80 cu ft/min at 2in s.w.g. and the power input HOW at 2.800 r.p.m. The Plessey Company (UK) Ltd, llford, Essex; Ilford 3040. (Stands 84-86 and 99-101) On show for the first time will be a Plessey Type 220 constant-speed-drive/ starter system (CSDS) designed for the BAC One-Eleven. A pneumatically con trolled, hydraulically governed mechanical drive, the Type 220 has a designed overhaul life of 3,000hr and is continuously rated at 30kW (47.5 h.p.), with a 5min rating of 45kW (71 h.p.). The Plessey Type 300 air- motor servo unit, bevel gearboxes and pilot's controller, which form the nozzle swivelling control system in the VTOL Hawker P.I 127, will be shown as an example of advanced, high-temperature pneumatic control equipment. Fuel systems for both industrial and air craft gas turbine engines will be seen, an example of the latter being a fuel system developed for high thrust : weight ratio VTOL powerplants. Also of interest is the Plessey water-injection pump—one of many different types of pump on show—which ensures maintenance of engine performance at take-off under high-temperature or low barometric pressure conditions. Electrical exhibits will include a 500VA (continuous rating) static inverter, which provides a 230V, 400 c/s output; a twin- motor a.c. Vulture actuator; a single-phase a.c. Raven actuator; a range of equipment blowers from lin to 2£in diameter; and a transistorized version of the Plessey pre cision windscreen temperature controller. Generation equipment is represented by a 40kVA Plessey-Westinghouse a.c. genera tor and control gear channel—as specified, in four-channel form providing a total capacity of 160kVA, for the Vickers VC10 series of aircraft. Plessey-Westinghouse generation equipment is also specified for the BAC One-Eleven. The Pyrene Co Ltd, 9 Grosvenor Gardens, London SW1; Victoria 8474. (Stand 64) A new miniature smoke detector, the Pyrene MSD1, has been installed in the Vickers VC10 and chosen for the Short Belfast strategic freighter. It is only 2|in diameter by 7Jin long, and it gives high sensitivity for a current consumption of only 0.20A. The Pyrene PSDA1/G4 smoke detector and the ASLD3F visual smoke indicator are fitted to the de Havilland Trident. There are four hand extinguishers in the range known as the PA models which are particularly suited for use on light aircraft, and for "first aid" on larger machines. These four are of a common basic design and differ only in contents and distinguishing colour. They are very simple to operate, maintain, and recharge. Larger equipment, as used in such aircraft as the VC10, Comet, Britannia, and many others can also be seen at Farn- borough, and, as in previous years, a Pyrene crash tender and crew will be on operational duty during the entire flying display. (Stand 116) This company will show the automatically inflated one-man liferaft, and a 26-man liferaft; the Zodiac inflatable crash-rescue unit for use at airports sited close to water; lifesaving equipment for air-cushion vehicles; and pneumatic lifting bags for aircraft salvage. RFD are also showing banner targets and containers, gunnery trainers which simulate ground-to- <• air and sea-to-air firing under operations, conditions, and portable air-supportec structures to provide temporary accommo dation and storage at airports. Rotax Ltd, Willesden Junction, Londo> NW10; Elgar 7777. (Stand 134) Under s licence agreement with Avco Corporatior, Rotax are producing the Lycoming mech anical constant-speed drives for use in British and European aircraft. Rotax are thus able to offer complete constant- frequency systems of 400 c/s utilizing their wide range of alternators of conventional, rotating-rectifier and solid-rotor types. An illustration on page 355 depicts the 20kVA constant-speed drive matched with a Rotax solid-rotor alternator. Performance details for this combination include: out put, 20kVA at 8,000 r.p.m. at 400 c/s; voltage, 208; phases, 3; rating, continuous; p.f., 0.8; speed range, 7,600 to 12,000 r.p.m.; d.c. excitation, 200W (full load); weight, 521b. A big saving in size and weight may be effected by the use of transistorized control and protection units, and the box associated with the previously mentioned 20kVA solid-rotor machine weighs 101b and typi cally maintains voltage within 2 per cent, recovery from a full-load switch being com plete in about 0.02sec. Other Rotax developments include: the introduction of a new starter/generator weighing 53£Ib and providing 9kW at 30V d.c. as a generator and 521b-ft torque at 900 r.p.m. as a starter; a new series of a.c. linear and rotary actuators; Rotax - Baldwin shaft encoders covering 11 to 19 digits; further progress with single-pole, double-pole and three-pole sealed toggle switches and hermetically sealed relays; and a silicon-rectifier static inverter in which the output from a square-wave oscillator is differentiated and applied to the gates of two SCRs connected in push-pull to give a close-tolerance a.c. supply.
