130 FLIGHT International, 30 August 1% Napier Gazelle-for helicopters The Gazelle free turbine engine (1,450-2,000 s.h.p.) allows any-angle installation. The ease with which it meets emergency demands has earned it a tremendous international reputation. It powers the Royal Navy's Westland Wessex and the Westland Belvederes in service with the Royal Air Force. It is also on order for the Royal Australian Navy. The Gazelle 512 is developed for use in helicopters where a side-by-side, overhead or pod installation is required. All reduction gear is incorporated in the aircraft rotor system, power being taken from the free turbine output shaft. The engine is fitted with an axial intake.
