Few professions com bine these advantages to the extent that you will find them as an officer flying in the Royal Air Force. To apply for a Direct Entry com mission you must have, or expect to gain, G.C.E. at 'O' level (or equivalent) in mathematics, English language and three other acceptable subjects; you must be over 17 and under 26; and you must be fit, decisive, and able to take respon sibility. Over £1,800 a Year If your application is successful and you pass your tests and train ing, you could be commissioned within four months of joining. Within six months you could be starting your specialist training as a pilot, navigator or air electronics officer. As a member of aircrew your pay is excellent: you earn £976 as a Flying Officer of 21, and as a Flight Lieutenant of 25 drawing full allowances you could earn over £1,800. You are guaranteed a career to the age of 38 (or for 16 years, which ever is the longer) which qualifies you for a pension of at least £485 a year as well as a tax-free gratuity. There are good prospects of serving to the age of 55 with an increased pension. Alternatively you may choose to leave after 8 or 12 years with a gratuity of up to £4,000.
