FLIGHT International, 6 September 1962 :i Air Movement in the VC10 - planned with Plannair For ventilation and equipment cooling in the VC10 and the Super VC10, Vickers-Armstrongs (Aircraft) Limited called in Plannair right at the planning stage. Leading aircraft manufacturers throughout the industry are calling in Plannair—right from the start. Wherever air is to be circulated for heating, cooling or ventilating purposes, with complete reliability, there's a place for Plannair. For louvre boost One Type 5PL101-566 fitted with a sound deadenin" "leeve and with an output of o8u c.f.m. at 7 in. s.w.g. at 11,000 r.p.m. One of the most important features of this blower is the special non-stall im peller (pat. applied for) which en ables the unit to operate in a completely stable condition from full flow to no flow-thus allowing the cabin air supply louvres to be switched on or off at random. For cabin air re-circulation Two Type 8PL401-423 single stage axial blowers with outputs of 880 c.f.m. at 22.8 in. s.w.g. at a nominal speed of 11,000 r.p.m. For the Super VC10, this output is stepped up to 960 c.f.m. at 25 in. s.w.g. by increasing the tip diameter of the impeller and stator blades. The blowers are encased in a special sound deadening sleeve, and the motor is air cooled internally on a constant re-circulation principle. For galley and toilet ventilation Sound deadened Type 3PL181-465 units with outputs of 95 c.f.m. at 2.5 in. s.w.g. at 11,000 r.p.m. For radio rack cooling One Type 5PL101-430 with an out put of 680 c.f.m. at 7 In. s.w.g. at the design point. The unit is fitted with slip rings and centrifugal contacts which act as a 'fail-safe' device by switching on a stand-by blower in the event of a motor failure.
