378 FLIGHT International, 6 September 1962 WORLD E W S The European SST Projects for supersonic airliners have been so prolific for so many years that it is not easy to grasp the fact that in this issue we illustrate for the first time a design which, if the British and French Governments can reach full agreement, will actually enter scheduled airline service by about 1969. The design is clearly a synthesis of the best features of the original Sud Dassault Super Caravelle and Bristol 198. and some of its basic features are worthy of comment. The cruising Mach number will be 2.2: it will have a fixed geometry; it is area-ruled, and a considerable proportion of the fuse lage (which is of nearly circular section and must be some 190ft in length) is devoted to payload accommodation, with 45 basically rectangular windows along each side; and medium-range and transatlantic versions are envisaged, differing only in that the latter will trade underfloor freight for fuel. At one time BAC had a scheme for a larger, six- engined SST for use on the Atlantic, but the noise and "bang" problems of this 400,0001b-plus aircraft were deemed to be too severe. A preliminary description of the joint BAC/Sud design will be found on pages 381-382, and further details and illustrations are contained in our special SBAC Show Report which begins on page 397. SST Discussions A visitor to Britain this week is Mr Najeeb Halaby, Administrator of the Federal Aviation Agency. He is having informal talks with the Minister of Avia tion, Mr Julian Amery, and one of the topics for discussion was to be the possi bility of joint research into the develop ment of a supersonic airliner. It is reported Army on the Flight Deck This Auster A0P.9 of 3 Recce Flight landing on HMS "Hermes" was one of the first Army Air Corps aircraft to land on the carrier. Three Austers of the flight flew aboard from the airstrip at Dhekelia, Cyprus, when the carrier was steaming 30 miles offshore. Purpose of the fight was to test operational liaison between ground troops and their Naval support, one of the aircraft carrying Brig D. Beckett, commander of 19 Infantry Brigade Group from Washington that American officials have said that there is no suggestion of an amalgamation of the American research programme with that of Britain and France. Mr Halaby was due to visit the SBAC Show and is going on to Paris and Rome. Fiat STOL Transport At Turin, Fiat are designing a medium- size, high-wing, twin-boom freighter appar ently aimed at the NATO BMR.22 speci fication. Two propeller engines are supple mented by lift engines mounted in the booms fore and aft of the wing torsion box. The undercarriage retracts into a fuselage blister. This project is apparently competitive with the Dorner Do31, which is to have two Bristol Siddeley Pegasus vectored- thrust engines, and four Rolls-Royce RB.162 lift engines. Six-ton Gun is the nickname applied to the Republic F-IOSD when operating in the attack role with a bomb load of that weight, as seen here. Three teams ofF-IOSs will shortly compete in the "William Tell" bombing contest &3F M^^ jTfff; ;, f t
