Isherwood J. W. C. Judge THE FLYING-DISPLAY PILOTS D. A. S. Cohan (Whirlwind Series 3): Joined Westland Aircraft in 1949 and is the company's longest-serving test pilot. In the RAF from 1940 to 1946, with Nos 64 and 249 Sqns, being awarded the DFC. Joined Scottish Aviation after the war as an airline pilot and first flew helicopters in 1948. Lt Cdr R. R. Crayton (Wessex 1): Joined Westland Aircraft as a test pilot last year on retiring from the Royal Navy, which he entered in 1941. Flew fixed-wing aircraft (with No 836 Sqn at Stretton as a test pilot, at the CFS and at RAF Syerston) until 1952, when he took a helicopter course. Thereafter on instructional duties (1953-54) with No 848 Sqn in Malaya and with Nos 845 and 701 Sqn*. Sqn Ldr S. G. ("John") Cruse (.Olympus Vulcan): Joined RAF in September 1945 and came out with rank of squadron leader in August 1961; awarded AFC. Trained in Southern Rhodesia; flew Hast ings on the Berlin Airlift. Formed aerobatic team of" 111 Sqn in 1953; ETPS, 1956. Went to Boscombe Down in 1957; worked on all V-bombers; joined Bristol Siddeley's flight test team as a test pilot on completion of RAF serv ice. Gp Capt J. Cunningham (Trident)', de Haviiland Aircraft chief test pilot since 1946 and a director since 1958. Started flying for the company in 1938. Served in the RAF, becoming the highest-scoring (20) night fighter pilot. First flew the Comet in 1949 and has subsequently set up many records with these aircraft. Chief pilot on the Comet 3 world flight in 1955; in 1958 captained a Comet 4 on the fastest-ever Atlantic crossing by an airliner and the fastest long flight (Hong Kong to London in daylight: 16hr 16min flying time). Is an OBE and DL; holds the DSO and two Bars and the DFC and Bar. Wg Cdr J. L. Dell (Lightning): Chief test pilot of English Electric since January last year, having been deputy chief test pilot from December 1959. Had previously (from 1957) been Fighter Command liaison officer, taking an active part in the develop ment programme of the Lightning. Joined the RAF in 1942; has been a flying instructor and completed a tour of operations with the USAF (1952-54). Sqn Ldr L. De Vigne (Whirlwind Series 3): Test pilot with Westland Aircraft since 1953, having served in the RAF from 1940 to 1951. Won the DSO and DFC serving with 627 Sqn (Mosquitoes) in the PFF. Test pilot with 41 Group, Maintenance Command, 1945-46; took No 6 ETPS course, 1947; Service and civilian test pilot with RAE Farnbor- ough, 1948-52, being awarded AFC. Chief test pilot, Armstrong Siddeley Motors, 1952-53. Carried out initial test flights on the deflected-jet Meteor (Nene). J. S. Fay (Whirlwind Mk 10): Test pilot and chief flying instructor of Westland Aitcraft, having joined the company in 1952. Served with the FAA from 1940to 1945: with 832 Sqn in HMS Victorious, at the Service Trials Unit, the helicopter unit at Hanworth and ASE Haselmere. With the BEA Helicopter Unit, 1947-52. Author of The Helicopter and How It Flies. Sqn Ldr W. R. Gellatly (Scout): Joined the RNZAF in 1940. Between 1942 and 1945 did 77 light bomber and GR operations; from October 1944 to July 1945 commanded 293 Sqn, RAF. CGI at 231 OCU 1947-48; flight commander, 139 Sqn, until February 1950. ETPS course, 1950; helicopter flight com mander at A&AEE, 1951-54; RAF Staff College course, 1945-55; then joined Fairey Aviation. Council member, Helicopter Association, 1953-55 and 1956-59. Joined Westland Aircraft (Fairey Aviation Division) in 1960; now deputy group chief test pilot. Sqn Ldr J. G. Harrison (Avro 748 Series 2): Chief test pilot of A. V. Roe since January 1958; joined the company as a test pilot in February 1954. Entered the RAF as an apprentice in 1935; started flying in 1941. Completed training in Canada and became an instructor there. In 1944 posted to a Mosquito OTU, then served with 605 Sqn in 2nd TAF. ETPS course, 1949; joined the Aerodynamics Flight at the RAE, being awarded the AFC. Has flown 87 types of aircraft. O. J. Hawkins (Avro 748 Series 2): In 1958 joined A. V. Roe after test flying with Gloster Aircraft Co. Served with the RNZAF in 1942, flying P-40s and Corsairs; came to England in 1951 to join RAF. Appointed to RAE (1954) and subsequently to ETPS; then flew with "A" Sqn at Boscombe Down. Sqn Ldr H. G. Hazelden (Herald): Appointed chief test pilot of Handley Page three months after joining the company in 1947. Flew Hampdens with 44 Sqn during the war, winning the DFC and Bar. Subsequently instructed at 14 OTU then joined 83 Sqn. Took the ETPS course and went to the A&AEE, later commanding the Heavy Aircraft Test Sqn. Appointed OC the Civil Aircraft Test Section and awarded a King's Commendation Received a Queen's Commendation in 1958. C. T. D. Hosegood (Belvedere): Bristol Aircraft chief helicopter test pilot from 1951. Served in the FAA during the war, being appointed to the first armed merchant cruiser to be fitted with a catapult. One of the first Naval pilots sent to the USA for heli copter training, serving with various experimental units after his return to the UK in mid-1944, and on loan to the RAF at Beaulieu, where the Heli copter Experimental Unit originated. Joined Bristol Aeroplane Co in 1948 to assist in helicopter test and development flying. Joined Westland Aircraft (Bristol Helicopter Division) in I960; nov. chief test pilot of the division. T. Howard (Auster Mk 11): Senior pilot andengineer- in-charge flight trials, Beagle-Auster. Learned to fly with Nottingham UAS while at Loughborough College, of which he holds a diploma. Served in the RAF from 1948-49, gaining his wings in 1949 Joined Auster in 1951 as an aerodynamicist became chief aerodynamicist at Rearsby in 1959 and this year was appointed senior pilot. Is an AFRAeS. J. K. Isherwood (Lightning): Joined English Elec tric in 1956 as a communications and u/t test pilot; transferred to Canberra flying in 1959 ano changed to Lightnings in 1960. Began flying with the RAF in 1952, after Merchant Navy service, becoming a fighter pilot with 19 Sqn. Was member of 609 (West Riding) Sqn. RAuxAi Is currently on No 21 ETPS course. J. W. C. Judge (Beagle 218): Test pilot with Beagle Miles at Shoreham since early this year. Served in the RAF during the war with 33 and 245 Sqns, after the war with 615 Sqn, RAuxF. Holds Queer, Commendation for Valuable Service in the An Took his PPL in 1947; well known as a compete- in air racing events.
