FLIGHT International, 6 September 1962 D. Lockspeiser (.Hunter): Joined Hawker Aircraft in 1955 on release from the RAF, in which he had served since 1949. At 6 FTS, 203 AFS and 229 OCU; with 118 Sqn (1951-53) and 245 Sqn'(19S3-55> Is an ARAeS. H. C. H. Merewether (P.1127): A South African who joined Hawker Aircraft as a test pilot in 1954 after serving with the FAA (1943-46) and being trained as a pilot by the US Navy (1944-45). In theRAFVR (1947-51) and with 615 Sqn, RAuxAF (1951-56). Before joining Hawker was with Vickers-Armstrongs as a technician in research and development. Lt CMr V. Mitchell Beagle 206X): Joined Beagle Aircraft in May this year as military assistant to the commercial director. Born in South Africa, he served in the Fleet Air Arm as a pilot in Korea and is a QFI. His last Naval appointment was that of flag lieutenant and personal pilot to Admiral F. H. E. Hopkins. Has held a PPL since 1950. P. Murphy (Herald): Joined Handley Page in 1958 after being with Vickers-Armstrongs (Aircraft) since 1951 as an experimental test pilot, engaged in Valiant and Viscount development. Had previously served in the RAF, qualifying as a pilot in 1947 and from 1948 to 1951 serving with 56 and 66 (day- flghter) Sqns. Was aerobatic team leader and, flying Meteors, took part in many displays includ ing that for the Festival of Britain in June 1951. R. M. Oliver (Gnat Trainer): Joined Folland Aircraft as a test pilot in 1957. Flew fighter aircraft during the war with the RAF (from Malta) and after the war with 600 (City of London) Sqn, RAuxAF Before joining Folland was chief development engineer with the Connaught Engineering Co working on and driving Grand Prix racing cars. G. H. Pike (D.H.125): With de Havilland Aircraft at Hatfield since September 1953 as test pilot on Comets, Herons and Doves, having previously been chief test pilot (military) at Christchurch. A former D.H. apprentice, began test flying with the engine and propeller companies; in 1942 transferred to the aircraft company for experi mental work. Responsible for second flights of the Vampire and Hornet and in 1943 for Mosquito development. Made first flights on the Dove. Heron and D.H. 133. R. L. Porteous (Beagle 206X): Sales manager, Beagle- Auster Ltd, formerly sales director (from 1956) and chief test pilot (from 1948), Auster Aircraft. Learned to fly at Hatfield in 1935 and before the war was flying instructor, junior test pilot and sales representative with Phillips and Powis (Miles) Aircraft, Reading. In the RAFO from 1937 onwards; president of the Central Examining Board, Rhodesia, 1944-45; manager and CFI, Derby Aero Club, 1947-48. In 1947 set up a 100km closed-circuit record in a Chilton. R. N. Rumbelow (Jet Provost): Joined Hunting Aircraft in April 1957 after serving in the RAF since 1951. Was with 208 Sqn in the Middle East from 1953 to 1955, then a flying instructor for the following two years. Was 1956 winner of the Wright Jubilee Trophy for aerobatics. W. H. Sear (Wessex 2): Seconded to Westland Air craft in 1953 after completing the ETPS course in 1951 and being posted to "C" Sqn, A&AEE. Boscombe Down. Served in the RAF from 1942 to 1945, transferring in the latter year to the FAA, in which he was with 891 and subsequently 812 and 816 Sqns. After taking a CFS course was appointed Naval instructor at RAF Syerston. Appointed Westland Aircraft group chief test pilot in 1960. C. W. Simpson (Beagle 206 Y): Joined Beagle this year from Armstrong Whitworth Aircraft; before AWA. with the RAF HandlingJSquadron'at Boscombe 419 Down. Originally joined the RAF in 1942, training in Canada and staying there as a flying instructor until 1944. Next year transferred to the FAA and on demobilization returned to Loughborough College. Spent two years as a technical assistant with Bristol Aero Engines, then rejoined the RAF in 1950, serving as an instructor with Flying Training and Coastal Commands (1951-56) before going to Bos combe Down. D. M. S. Simpson (Hunter): Joined Hawker Aircraft in 1954, having previously served in the RAF from 1949. At 6 FTS and 203 AFS, then with 226 OCU and 222 (Natal) Fighter Sqn, CFE (1953-54). Is an AFRAeS. R. Stock (Jet Provost): Joined Hunting Aircraft this year as a test pilot, after being jet training officer at Marshall's Flying School, Shawbury; previously served in the RAF, latterly as a Jet Provost instructor at 2 FTS, after completing the CFS course. Before that, with 94 Sqn and in Transport Command. Sqn Ldr E. A. Tennant (Gnat Trainer): Chief test pilot of Folland Aircraft, having joined the company in June 1953. Served with the RAF during the war in 256 Sqn (Defiants) and 257 and 263 Sqns (Typhoons) and was awarded the DFC. In 1949 went to ETPS and thence to the A&AEE, Bos combe Down, where he remained until joining Folland Aircraft. E. B. Trubshaw (VC10): Chief test pilot, Vickers-Arm strongs (Aircraft), since 1961; has been principally concerned in recent years with flight development of the Viscount, Vanguard and Valiant. Served in Bomber Command during the war and later with the King's Flight: at ETPS in 1948, then on the stan" of the RAF Flying College before joining Vickers as an experimental test pilot in 1950.
