434 FLIGHT International, 13 September 1962 FARNBOROUGH WEEK . . . The Hawker P.I 127, seen above hovering during the display, has several new features. The drawing below shows the ventral strokes to inhibit recirculation, the use of the rear undercarriage door as an air-brake, and the new exhaust-gas deflector. The ram-air turbine automatically extends whenever the engine stops to discuss this. When? Soon. How about Blue Water? No comment. How about the SBAC Show ? Mr Amery ceased stone walling and declared that he found the show impressive, particularly the static exhibition, where, he said, this year's themes were strong and clear. After a prolonged bright spell over lunch, it was raining again when the Jet Provosts of CFS made their formation take-off to begin the afternoon's flying display. The early items on the pro gramme—T. 188, H.P.I 15, Olympus Vulcan, CFS and BAC Jet Provosts—did well in spite of appalling weather. The sky was blue again in time for the Navy's contribution, notable in which was the twinkle roll by all four of the Scimitar quartet; the superb "rising sun" burst by Fred's Five in their Sea Vixens; and the final follow- my-leader low pass by the five Scimitars which produced four audible near-sonic almost-bangs. The entire flying programme was completed. During the day Westland Aircraft Ltd made two announcements. One said that "a substantial quantity" of Westland Wessex 5 helicopters, each powered by BS Coupled Gnomes, had been ordered by the Royal Navy for commando duties. The other stated that the Westland company and Autair Helicopters Ltd of Montreal had reached an agreement for the "joint operational exploitation" of Westland Hovercraft in Canada, and that a version of the SR.N2 would be taken to Canada for testing under Canadian conditions. Manufacturer's drawing of a typical operational cockpit layout for the Hawker P. 1127, with map display, course- and-distance dial and UHF radio. Note that the only additional control for VTOL flight is the nozzle-angle lever beside the throttle
