FLIGHT International, 13 September 1962 49 Brams HI FOR THE LCI. silicone dielectric coolants (heat-transfer fluids with excellent electrical properties) provide highly efficient heat transfer by direct immersion of electronic units in the fluid stream. Their remarkable combination of properties extends their applica tions beyond the range of con ventional dielectric fluids. * high closed-cup flash point * trouble-free operation from —80 C to +250CC * small viscosity/temperature variations * very low power factor * good electric strength * high volume resistivity Above Mach 2, problems of cooling electronic equipment become acute and I.C.I, silicone dielectric coolants come into their own. In America an equiva lent silicone dielectric coolant is flying in the B 47, B 52, B 57 and B 66 aircraft in a heat-exchanger unit used to cool electronic counter measures equipment. OTHER APPLICATIONS INCLUDE: Capacitors, pulse transformers, airborne and land- based radar equipment, television circuit compo nents, electronic modules, micro-wave tubes, power rectifiers, junction tube transformers, magnetrons, kylstrons and deflection amplifiers. Other silicone materials for the space age include ' Silcoset' room - temperature- curing- rubbers for potting and encapsu lating, sealing and caulking applica tions; 'Silcodyne' H hydraulic fluid: compressible dimethyl silicone fluids for liquid springs and damping applica tions ; high hysteresis rubber for making shock absorbers and anti-vibration mounts. Silicones are already doing a valuable job in many industries, but new silicones, new uses are continually emerging. It may well be that these can help improve your product, your process—and your profits. The I.C.I. Silicones Consultancy Service is organised to explore such possibilities with you.
