Previous experience of electronic, electrical, or telecommunications engineering is highly desirable, but amateur radio construction hobbies or radio or radar experience in the Services may provide the minimum technical knowledge needed for entry to the training course. Selection will be by tests of aptitude and technical knowledge, and interview. The work will consist of on-site commissioning and testing of such equipment as Audio. Carrier. Voice Frequency Telegraph. Multi-channel telephony. Co-axial and Submarine Cables, and Micro wave links. It involves working away from home for long periods, and at present we have installation staff working throughout the U.K. and in many places abroad including Scandinavia, Portugal, Egypt, Malta. Greece. Australia, and South America. There are thus REAL OPPORTUNITIES FOR TRAVEL THROUGHOUT THE WORLD Ability to drive a car or light van will be an advantage. Starting salary will be £12.16.0 per week at age 21 and living allowances of £5.19.0 a week are paid while working away from home. Suitable candidates can expect to be earning £1.000 a year—exclusive of living allowances—within four or five years. Initial training will consist of 12 weeks class-room instruction followed by several months practical on-site experience. It also offers high rewards: interesting work, good pay—and by the time you are 23 you will have seen more of the world than many men twice your age. To apply for a Direct Entry commission you must be over 17 and under 26 and have G.C.E. at 'O' level (or equivalent) in English language, mathematics and three other acceptable subjects. You may apply if you are still at school and expect to gain these qualifications. Over £1,800 a Year If your applica tion is successful and you pass your tests and training, you could be com missioned within four months of joining. Within six months you could be starting your specialist training as a pilot, navigator or air electronics officer. As a member of aircrew your pay is excellent: you earn £976 as a Flying Officer of 21, and as a Flight Lieutenant of 25 drawing full allow ances you could earn over £1,800. You are guaranteed a career to the age of 38 (or for 16 years, whichever is the longer) which qualifies you for a pension of at least £485 a year as well as a tax-free gratuity. There are good prospects of serving to the age of 55 with an increased pension. Alter natively you may choose to leave after 8 or 12 years with a gratuity of up to £4,000. Choosing a career is an import ant moment in your life. Flying with the R.A.F. is one of the most important careers you could choose.
