Lamson Engineering Co Ltd are showing demonstration air tube systems as used in airports for conveying flight plans, teleprinter messages, weather charts, cargo manifest sheets, etc; and also V- trough conveyors, as used in many airline booking offices. Marconi's Wireless Telegraph Co Ltd are showing an AD722 sub-miniature radio compass and a model of an S 264A 50cm airways surveillance radar. Their exhibits will include a map of the UK airways system indicating the sites of Marconi S 232, S 264 and S 264A 50cm radars. Silver City Airways are displaying maps and photographs of their network, particularly in relation to nearby Hum Airport, and the current operations of British United Air Ferries will be illustrated by maps and brochures, and by models of their Carvair and Bristol aircraft. Smiths Aviation Division are showing items of Motorola equipment, including a VOR/Localizer indicator model 4080B, ADF servo/ amplifier indicator and VOR ILS indicator model 4087B. Their exhibits will also include an ADF-T-12B controller/receiver system, course director control switch and a flight controller for the M4 automatic flight control system. Solartron Electronic Group Ltd are showing their fully transistorized two-target radar simulator. This will be demonstrating the new ASR/PAR control unit and will reproduce moving weather and permanent echoes. It will have the new monitor unit providing range and bearing and target-reporting points with full off-centring facilities. Standard Telephones and Cables Ltd will feature their "three-four" lightweight communications and navigation equipment, an example being shown in a Beagle instrument panel. Maximum flexibibty is achieved by three alternative communication sets, using a com mon basic tiansmitter/receiver. The fully transistorized unit provides 400 manually switched channels and has a power output in excess of 200mW; two amplifier units allow radiated power to be increased to 6W or 20W. Independent navigation units provide ILS/VOR and marker operation. STC will also illustrate the tech niques of the VORDAC system recently proposed to Eurocontrol. Thermionic Products (Electronics) Ltd are showing two multi channel airport recorders, a Series HI which is basically the 20- channel equipment for automatic logging of communications in ATC, built to meet MoA requirements for fully automatic slef- monitoring and a guaranteed continuous "listening watch"; and a Series IV communications recorder, built up from basic six- channel units into a wide variety of installations. BOOM TIME FOR A HELICOPTER AN S.58 helicopter operated by World Wide Helicopters (UK) Ltd placed a 50ft boom on top of a lOOft-high tower at the Esher rugby ground, Hersham, Surrey, on Monday of last week and two stages in the operation are depicted on this page. The tower is for use by the Decca Radar research laboratory. The task of guiding and securing the boom was undertaken by the erection department of W. E. Waite Ltd, Aldershot, and the helicopter pilot was Bob Wilson. The main structure comprises an access stairway-type radio mast of 6 x 4ft section, designed and manufactured by Access Equipment Ltd, Hemel Hempstead.
