812 FLIGHT Internationa1. 22 November 1%2 A I R COMMERCE The first of two Boeing 720Bs for Saudi Arabian Airlines on test near Boeing's airport at Renton, Washington. The Arabian airline, it is reported, has sub-contracted maintenance of these aircraft to Sabena EURAVIA SKYWAYS DEAL GOES THROUGH AS forecast in these pages three months ago, the take-over of Skyways by Euravia has been completed. The background to this merger was given in Flight International for August 2, page 161. Euravia assumes control of the new company, which is under the general direction of Mr J. E. D. Williams, Euravia's managing director. The take-over does not affect the operations of Skyways Coach Air Ltd, which continues to function as a completely separate company under Mr Eric Rylands. No official announcement has yet been made, but Mr R. Selby- Lowndes of Euravia is reported to have said that "to all intents and purposes Euravia now controls Skyways." Details would be issued. Both carriers would, he said, retain their identities for the foresee able future to keep licensing problems to a minimum. The joint company, as expected, will be based at Luton, Euravia's home, and Skyways equipment will be transferred from Manston and Lympne. Skyways fleet includes three Constellation 749As, and these will now join the two 049s and one 149 operated by Euravia. Trans-Caribbean Airways has become the third customer for the Douglas DC-8F. An order for one has been placed following orders for four from TCA and one from Trans-International Airlines. KLM Flights to Indonesia Again? The Indonesian Government has informed KLM that there is no objection to the resumption of KLM flights to Djakarta. This followed month-long talks in Djakarta between a KLM representative and Indonesian officials, in the course of which the sale by KLM of de Kroonduif to Garuda was arranged. Mr Majendie's Appointment Mr Michael Majendie, director and deputy general manager of Smiths Aviation Division, and flight captain of the original BO AC Comet fleet, has been elected the new Master of the Guild of Air Pilots and Air Navigators. Air Vietnam DC-3 Crash It is reported that a DC-3 of Air Viet nam crashed on a jungle-covered mountain side 37 miles north east of Saigon on a scheduled flight between Hue and Da-Nang on November 10. On board were 24 passengers and crew of three. Solair Flying Services Ltd is the name of a new UK operator which has applied to the ATLB to operate Rapide services for passengers, cargo and mail to St Just and St Mary's from Birmingham, Coven try, Cheltenham or Exeter. The address of the company is 18 Glebe Farm Road, Birmingham. Varig Convair 990 Discussions No agreement has yet been reached between Varig and General Dynamics about the three Convair 990s ordered by REAL before it was absorbed by Varig, and which are not now required by the airline. According to Aviation Daily the US State Department has "moved into the conflict." Douglas Model 2086B is the designation of the twin-jet short-haul airliner project re-engined with Pratt & Whitney JT8D-5s derated to 12,0001b thrust (from the 14,0001b as fitted in the 727) instead of JTF10A-6s. According to Aviation Daily this version, which weighs 77,0001b compared with 69,0001b, has been prepared primarily for American Airlines, an operator believed to be seriously interested in the BAC One-Eleven.
