Saunders, RRAF SERVICE AVIATION Air Force, Naval and Army Flying News 230 Squadron's Move WESTLAND GNOME WHIRLWINDS Of 230 Sqn flew last week from Odiham to their new base at Gutersloh, Germany, where they have now become part of the Second Allied Tactical Air Force. Six aircraft left on Tuesday and five on Wednesday, flying via Manston, Dover, Calais, Coxhyde and Wildenrath. The squadron took part in relief opera tions from RAF Chivenor (Flight Inter national, last week) during recent West Country blizzard conditions. Down Mexico Way TWO VICTOR B.2s of 139 (Jamaica) Sqn are going to Mexico City at the end of this month on a goodwill visit. They will leave their base at Wittering next Monday (January 28) and fly via Goose Bay, Labrador, and Offutt AFB, Neb. Ground- crew are going out by Transport Command Britannia. At Mexico City the aircraft will be on static display and give flying demonstra tions. The Mexican President, Senor Adolfo Lopez Mateos, the Defence Minister, General Olachea, and Air Force C-in-C, General Villalobos, have been invited to fly in the Victors. \ir Staff Posts IUST BEFORE CHRISTMAS, the appointments were announced of AVM T. O. Prickett as Assistant Chief of Air Staff (Policy and Planning), Air Cdre R. I, Jones as Director of Flying Training and Air Cdre E. J. Morris as Director of Operations (Air Defence and Overseas). These appoint ments, taking effect next month, were noted in detail on this page for January 3. The Air Ministry has subsequently- issued an explanatory memorandum on these new posts, pointing out that the posi tion of Assistant Chief of the Air Staff (Training) is being dis-established and its responsibilities vested in the Director of Flying Training. The post of Assistant Chief of the Air Staff (Policy and Planning) is new, though until 1959 there was an Assistant Chief of the Air Staff (Policy). The Directorates of Operations (Air De fence) and Operations (Overseas) are being merged under the new Directorate of Operations (Air Defence and Overseas) under the Assistant Chief of Air Staff (Operations). The purpose of this reorganization is to separate responsibility for day-to-day con duct of Air Staff operational business from the study of what are essentially longer- term problems of Air Staff policy and plan ning. FLIGHT International, 24 January 1963 131 Bristol Siddeley Trophy BRISTOL SIDDELEY ENGINES LTD have pre sented a handsome silver trophy—a late 18th Century figure of Mercury, of North Italian origin, mounted on an inscribed base—to the Central Flying School Heli copter Training Unit for award to the pilot in each of the four annual courses who achieves the best performance in the air. This trophy was handed-over at a guest night at RAF Ternhill last month to the AOC and Commandant, Air Cdre H. P. Connolly, by Gp Capt S. O. Tudor on behalf of Bristol Siddeley Engines. The first winner is Lt D. Bridger, RN, of No 53A Helicopter Instructor's Course (see picture), who received the trophy from Air Cdre Connolly. Lt D. Bridger, RN, first winner of the Bristol Siddeley Trophy at the CFS (see item above) Greek Appreciation "WARMEST THANKS" have been expressed by the Greek Charge d'Affaires in Cyprus, Mr M. Delivanis, to the AOC-in-C Near East, Air Chief Marshal Sir Denis Barnett, for two recent RAF operations. One was the rescue of the crew of the Greek vessel Aghios Nicolaus, which had run aground off the Lebanese coast, by Sycamores of 103 Sqn (this page. January 3); and the other the parachuting of RAF medical personnel on to Kastellorizo Island under adverse weather conditions, to help a seriously ill Greek woman. In his letter the Charge d'Affaires says that "the spirit of self-sacrifice and courage shown by the members of the rescue team . . . and by the helicopter crews has been greatly appreciated."
