180 • FLIGHT International, 7 February 1963 Thunderchief for Two Major external differences between the Republic F-I05F and the single-seat F-IOSD are here shown in a darker tint (see news-item WORLD NEWS . due to make its second flight the following day, saying of this aeroplane that "there isn't anything like it." He described Seacat as "a major success for Shorts": they had sold it to seven navies and hoped to sell it to a lot more. The company were still hoping to sell Tigercat; there were hopes of the French adapting it to their fire control system. Speaking of the many efforts by Shorts to diversify their activities, Mr Wrangham mentioned the Chance Vought tilt-wing XC-142. He said that it was of vital importance to the Northern Ireland com munity to have aeronautical strength. Republic F-105F The above sketch shows the external appearance of the Republic F-105F, the tandem-seat version of the Thunderchief multi-mission aircraft of the US Air Force. Such an aircraft was cancelled in 1959, but was re-ordered last year and first deliveries are now scheduled for the late summer of 1963. Approximately 31 in longer than the single-seat F-105D, and with a proportion ate increase in fin area, the F version will greatly facilitate the mission-training pro gramme of all USAF wings equipped with the Thunderchief and will also be able to accomplish all the roles handled by the F-105D. Deliveries will be made to the two F-105 wings in Europe, two Tactical Air Command wings in the USA and one wing of the Pacific Air Forces based on Okinawa. Jet Commander Flies The Jet Commander prototype made a successful first flight from its base at Nor man, Oklahoma, on January 27. Soon after the flight, the company claimed that results already indicated that estimates of performance would prove to have been conservative. Training Helicopter Pilots for the IAF Further details are now available of the programme, referred to in these pages last week, for training Indian Air Force heli copter pilots in this country. Bristow Heli copters (through British United Airways), and British Executive Air Services have each received a contract to train a number of IAF officers. Bristow are using Hiller 12Cs and 12Es at Redhill, and at Oxford BE AS are employing the Brantly B.2 recently evaluated by the Central Flying School. CFS are supervising the training programme on behalf of the IAF. The courses will last eight weeks each; that at Kidlington began on January 21 and the Redhill course opened on January 28. New Guinea Survey Port Moresby, wartime air base for the USAAC under Gen Douglas Macarthur, is now headquarters for a four-month geodetic survey being carried out by USAF aircraft and personnel, covering New Guinea and adjacent islands in the South west Pacific. Black on White The Soviet Information Service has re ported an unusual technique for melting ice in glaciers, by blackening them with coal dust from aircraft, to help rivers to increase their water yield in periods when water is most required for farm irrigation. The black surface increases heat absorption. Blackening of glaciers is to be carried out this year not only in Kirghizia but also in highland areas of central Asia. "Scientists have estimated," says the report, "that if only the eternal ice were melted the result ing water would be enough to cover the whole territory of Kirghizia (over 77,000 square miles) with 9ft of water. Squirting and Blowing Taking advantage of sub-zero weather at Ottawa, the Canadian National Research Council have conducted trials to prove the rotor de-icing of the Boeing-Vertol 107, six of which have been ordered as the CH-113 by the RCAF. On the right the Lockheed Georgia Company are testing the performance of the 21,000lb-thrust Pratt & Whitney TF33-7 turbofan powerplant of the C-I4I StarLifter under various cross-winds generated by a 155 m.p.h. portable wind machine 1 '- Jfe.
