2i: Inter-Service Co-operation: Naval Whirlwind of 845 Sqn being re-embarked on HMS "Albion" by RAF belvedere of 66 Sqn. Naval and Army Flying News RAF Helicopter Operations AN ANALYSIS of operations by the Royal Air Force Search and Rescue Organization last year shows that in 381 helicopter sorties in the United Kingdom, 247 people were rescued and assistance given in saving a further 103. There were 233 sorties in 1961, and activity has increased steadily since the helicopters were introdjeed in 1955. This flying has been done by two squadrons in Coastal Command. No 22 commanded by Sqn Ldr L. A. Barber and based at St Ma« gan, and No 228 command ed by Sqn Ldr M. E. Taylor at Leconfield. Detachments of these squadrons operate at Tangmere (w hich was the busiest station), Chivenor, Valley, Manston. Leconfield, Horsham St Faith. Acklington, Leuchars and St Ma\gan. At these stations Whirl wind Mk 10s are on da" n to dusk stand-by. Overseas, search and rescue aircraft (both fixed-wing and helicopters) of the Near East Air Force participated in 20 incidents; in the Far East Air Force there were 18 ASR sorties, and 24 in Air Forces Middle East. Gibraltar was involved in three incidents. RAF Bridgnorth Closing FIRST ROYAL AIR FORCE UNIT to have received the Freedom of Entry to a Borough, RAF Bridgnorth will also become the first to return the Freedom scroll to the civic authority when it closes down tomorrow. This Shropshire RAF station first opened its gates to recruits in November 1939 as No 4 Recruit Centre and during June 1940 was a rekitting centre for troops of many nationalities following the evacuation from Dunkirk. In March 1941 it became a WAAF Depot, then in September 1942 No 1 Elementary Air Navigation School and the School of Flying Control moved in. At the end of the war, Bridgnorth reverted to recruit training, when it was renamed No 7 Recruit Centre, a title later amended FLIGHT International, 7 February I%J to No 7 School of Recruit Training. Fol- lowing the close ties which had grown up between town and station, RAF Brjjjg. north was formally adopted by the iown council in 1947 and on April 12, 1950. the Freedom of Entry was conferred or the station. OP CAPT J. R. w. BLYTH, AFC, Director of Physical Education at the Air Ministry and famous as a parachutist—he has made more jumps (1,189) than any other member of the RAF—retires from the Service on March 2, his 50th lirthday. He joined No 1 Parachute Training S hool at RAF Ring was in 1942 and remained on the staff through out the war as a specialist in parachute jumping, moving with the school to Upper Heyford and later commanding it at Abingdon.
