270 FLIGHT International, 21 February l%] INDUSTRY International Flight Systems Products Company News Flight Systems Gnat Simulator Redifon have completed a trailer-mounted simulator, for the Gnat, incorporating several new features. The cockpit has a two-axis—pitch and roll— motion system, designed for the narrow confines of the trailer, and also a g-simu- lation system involving inflation of the pilot's g-suit and use of a special seat cush ion. The oxygen demand system is simu lated by use of purified air instead of oxygen and an ejection sequence raises the canopy and the pilot's seat if he performs the correct ejection drill. A track recorder chart covers 150 sq miles and has two adjustable Tacan sta tions, ILS and GCA, glide-slope, azi muth and speed performance from which are inked on three special recording cards. Many emergencies and changes in pressure, temperature, wind and turbulence can be simulated. STR.51 Altimeter Ordered Vickers-Arm- strongs (Aircraft) have ordered from Standard Telephones and Cables 100 STR. 51 radio altimeters and monitors for the automatic landing system of the BOAC VC10. The landing system is designed and made by Elliott Brothers (London) and each aircraft carries two altimeters with individual monitors. S.T.C. have designed several specialized altimeters and STR.51 is the designation of the variant designed to match the Elliott design. The altimeter aerial can be mounted up to 50ft away from the transmitter/receiver. Products Lasers for Guidance Sperry Rand have released information on a system of lasers which, they say, can be used to derive attitude rate signals for satellite stabiliza tion. The principle is that four lasers are arranged on the sides of a square, with mirrors at the corners to channel the light beams round the circuit. Beams are trans mitted in both directions round the ring and, if the platform rotates, one beam will have to travel slightly further than the other; its difference-frequency can then be accu rately detected to derive the rate signal. There are no moving parts. Angular dis placement of the vehicle can be calculated to 0.015°. The present bread-board system contains four Jin diameter, 3ft-long heli um/neon gas tubes. PIA-Leyland Contract A £15,000 con tract has been placed with the Leyland Motors Group by Pakistan International Airlines Corporation through die group's Karachi agents, James Finlay and Co Ltd, for four 110 h.p.
