278 Talking VTOL aboard HMS "Ark Royal" during P.I 127 trials ("World News" last week): the Commander (Air), Cdr A. R. RUSSELL, CBE, Dso, has been appointed Senior Air Staff Officer, RAF Coastal Command. During the war he commanded 172 Sqn, which became Coastal Command's first Leigh Light Wellington squadron, and was awarded the DSO for anti-U-boat operations. Sting in the Tail THREE NEW TRIBAL CLASS FRIGATES—HMS Gurka, Eskimo and Tartar—which are commissioning for Royal Navy service this month are to operate a Westland Wasp helicopter in an anti-submarine role. Use of these aircraft on Tribal Class frigates was referred to in an item ("Rolling at Bedford") on this page last week describing tests to counteract the problems of landing small helicopters on a moving deck. The new frigates are all fitted with Denny Brown stabilizers Standard for 54 Sqn NO 54 SQN ARE BEING PRESENTED with a squadron standard at RAF Waterbeach on May 24, and all past members and their wives are invited to attend the ceremony and subsequent celebrations. Past members are asked to contact the Adjutant, No 54 Sqn, RAF Waterbeach, Carnbs, so that they may receive official invitations and further details. The squa dron, which is commanded by Sqn Ldr C. P. Francis, and operates Hunter FGA.9s in 38 Group, say that "it is hoped that as many past members as possible will be able to attend this memorable occasion and enjoy the opportunity of a grand reunion." Mediterranean Post AVM D. C. MCKINLEY, CBE, DFC, AFC, who in 1944 captained the Lancaster Aries on the first RAF round-the-world flight, on which a new Australia- England record was estab lished, is to be AOC Malta from May 1. This post carries with it the appointment of Deputy Commander-in-Chief (Air), Allied Forces Mediterranean. An Irishman, born at Cashel, Co Tip- perary, 49-year-old AVM McKinley won the DFC in 1940 when with a Sunderland squadron, No 228, operating from RAF Pembroke Dock. He has until recently been attached to the MoA and in previous post war appointments has been chief instructor at the RAF Flying College, commanded the RAF unit at Farnborough and been a Director of Operational Requirements at the Air Ministry. For Asdic Read Sonar "SONAR" HAS REPLACED "ASDIC" in Naval terminology. This change, made in order to conform with NATO practice, was announced recently by the Admiralty. The terms AS (anti-submarine) and ASW (anti-submarine warfare) are not affected. Cranwell's Assistant Commandant GP CAPT A. C. DEERE, DSO, OBE, DFC, the famous New Zealand-born Battle of Britain pilot, has been appointed Assistant Commandant of the RAF College, Cran- well, taking up his duties on February 3. "Al" Deere, who is 42, has been Deputy Director of Personnel (Air) (2) at the Air Ministry. He was made an ADC to the Queen in March 1961. FLIGHT International, 21 February %j NO 501 (COUNTY OF GLOUCESTER) SON RAUXAF, was incorrectly named on this page last week in a reference to the standard which is to be presented to the squadron. EIGHT MORE 204B HELICOPTERS have been ordered by the RAAF from Textron's Bell Helicopter Co, Fort Worth, Texas. The order is worth $1.5m and deliveries are to be completed this year. The eight 204Bs delivered to the RAAF last year are oper ating in No 9 Sqn on search and rescue and other duties (this page, November 29,1962). £25 HAS BEEN GIVEN to the RAF Benevolent Fund by Lady Margaret van Cutsem of the Fortescue estates near Barnstaple, Devon, in gratitude for help given by RAF heli copters from Chivenor in dropping food for tenants and feed for stock at Simonsbath, Exmoor, since the New Year. Lady Margaret also sent six bottles of gin and six of whisky for air and ground crews who have been mounting the operations.
