386 FLIGHT International, 14 March 1963 Flight Systems Eurocontrol Established Following de position late last month of the French instrument of ratification, Euroconlrol became an official international organiza tion on March 1. A meeting of the com mission, composed of national directors of aviation and senior air force representatives, is to be held next month in Brussels, the new headquarters location. The organiza tion and intentions of Eurocontrol were described in our issue of February 28. Super Frelon Autopilot The French SFIM type 100 autopilot destined for the Sud Super Frelon was first flown in an HSS-1 at the Bretigny flight test centre late last month. A second example of the auto pilot, which is based on the Sperry ASE system, is ready for installation in an HSS-1N; and the type 111, with full anti submarine capability, will be fitted in the second Super Frelon. The type 123 is available for transport helicopters. Ghana Chooses Sarah Whirlwinds and Caribous of the Ghana Air Force are being fitted with Ultra Sarah receivers, and rescue beacons are being supplied. Ghana thus becomes the first West African territory to join more than 30 other countries in the use of Sarah. Specto Head-up Display In an article on the Specto head-up instrument display in this journal for February 28 it was reported that units had been ordered by Sweden. While active negotiations are in progress with the Royal Swedish Air Board, the order itself has not yet been placed. Products Goodyear Orders Goodyear have an nounced contracts for the supply of tyre, wheel and brake assemblies, and other equipment, for several important American military and civil aircraft types. In each case the brakes will be of the double disc type and the wheels of forged magnesium. Tyre sizes will be 11.00 x 12 for the twin mainwheels and 8.50 x 10 for the nosewheels. For the McDonnell F-4C (USAF version of the Navy's Phantom) Goodyear Tri- Metallic brakes will be provided, fitted in high-strength forged-aluminium wheels. Goodyear Aviation Products division is supplying fuel tanks for the F-4C, and the subsidiary Goodyear Aircraft Corporation is producing canopies and windshields and is developing a radar system for the aircraft. In the civil field the company has obtained a contract to produce mainwheel and brake assemblies for the Boeing 707-320C. The design of gear for this, the newest and heaviest 707, required very special consideration in view of the 328,0001b gross weight of the aircraft. The wheels. 46in K 16in, are in four-wheel bogie assemblies, and the Tri-Metallic brakes will absorb over 350 million foot-pounds in bringing the big aircraft to a smooth stop. Company News BAC Integration Move British Aircraft Corporation Ltd announced, on March 4, a plan "for the rationalization of its air craft and guided weapons facilities in accord ance with Group policy of progressive integration." The announcement gives the following details:— "The Corporation's guided weapons development and production facilities in English Electric Aviation Ltd and Bristol Aircraft Ltd will be integrated under the management of a new wholly owned sub sidiary company to be called British Air craft Corporation (Guided Weapons) Ltd. Sir George Edwards, CBE, DSC, HonFRAes, Hon HAS, managing director of the Corpora tion, will be chairman. Viscount Calde- COte, DSC, MA, MIMeChE, MIEE, AFRAeS, deputy managing director, will be managing director of the new company. "English Electric Aviation Ltd will take over the aircraft manufacturing facilities of the English Electric Co Ltd at Preston, Samlesbury and Warton. "As a consequence of these new arrange ments English Electric Aviation Ltd and Bristol Aircraft Ltd will in future concen trate solely on aircraft. Mr A. W. E. Houghton, AFRAes, production director of British Aircraft Corporation Ltd and managing director of Vickers-Armstrongs (Aircraft) Ltd, also becomes managing director of English Electric Aviation Ltd. Mr J. F. Harper, CA, remains managing director of Bristol Aircraft Ltd." The former English Electric factories at Strand Road, Preston, Lanes, and at Samlesbury Airfield eight miles away, have produced over 5,000 aircraft since 1938. Today they are employing more than 8,000 on the manufacture of the Lightning and carrying out a large part of the TSR.2 programme. Vapour-core Licence Dowty Fuel Systems Ltd, Cheltenham, announce that they have signed an agreement with the Societe Nationale d'Etude et de Construction de Moteurs d'Aviation (SNECMA) for the manufacture of the Dowty vapour-core pump under licence. One of the first applications in France will be on the SNECMA TF106, a reheat turbofan developed from the Pratt & Whitney JTF10 to power the Mirage HIV (and possibly a new version of the Mirage IV). The vapour-core pump, of the centri fugal type, is driven direct from the engine and is capable of pumping a wide range of flow without danger of overheating in low-flow conditions. It is the subject of a feature article on pages 364-366. Sixty Years on the Board At the recent annual general meeting of H. M. Hobson Ltd it was announced that Mr T. P. Searight, MiMechE, FRAes, MSAE, would not be offering himself for re-election as a director. "His reirement," say Hobson, "is notable inasmuch he has been a director since the company's foundation in 1903, and chair man from 1936 to 1951. In appreciation of his valuable services, Mr Searight has now been appointed the company's first hon orary life president, so enabling it to con tinue receiving the benefit of his advice and sage counsel in a consultative capacity."
