FLIGHT International, 4 April 1963 481 USA FLIGHT SYSTEMS Helicopter Approach Aid The Surface •ladar and Navigation Operation of Ray theon has developed a helicopter approach aid using a modified Mariners Pathfinder transmitter on the ground and a 101b receiver and 3in cross-pointer instrument in the aircraft. Transmission range has been limited to five miles, an in-range warning light being provided. The trans mitter signal is coded to give bearing in formation and transmits two shaped beams through 360° to define glide-slopes between 6° and 70° on any approach head ing. The pilot can choose his glide-slope angle and there is no electronic limit to the number of aircraft using the device. Raytheon note that there are now 1,497 civil commercial and private helicopters operating in the USA from 720 established heliports. NASA JetStar The National Aeron autics and Space Administration has ordered a Lockheed JetStar for $1,325,000 to be used by NASA's Flight Research Centre in investigating flying qualities, auto matic and manual controls, instrument displays and pilot training. PRODUCTS Allison Pump/generator A ram-air-driven pump/generator, forming an auxiliary power system which by gravity or airflow diversion will provide emergency electrical or hydraulic power for aircraft, is now in production at the Allison Division of General Motors as standard equipment for the Lockheed F-104G Super Starfighter. The unit consists basically of an air tur bine, rated nominally at 12,000 r.p.m., driving a 3,370W generator and a 4£ US gal/min pump. Weighing 361b, the pump/generator is 15in long and has a 12in-diameter propeller. One was success fully used in emergency recently on an A-4 Skyhawk which suffered electrical power failure. Pressure-change Detection A new rate- of-change pressure switch, designed to detect transient pressure changes, has been produced by Newark Controls Co, Bloom- field, NJ. It will detect either undesirable deviations or desired changes introduced by a controlled device. Known as the BG 125 and weighing less than 2oz, the switch gives a warning signal when pressure changes exceed a specified allowable rate. It will also signal when a critical amplitude is reached, where the rate of change of pressure is known, as in the ease of a pressure sound wave. Typical applications include monitoring of sealed-pressure apparatus for rapid leaks or rapid build-up of pressure, control er monitoring of applied linear rates of A DC-6B of Western Airlines being cleaned by a hydraulic jet unit, operating with steam and cold water, developed by Sellers Injector Corp, 1600 Hamilton Street, Philadelphia 30, Pa. Effective cleaning range of the jet stream, which is fed to a hand-held lance through heavy-duty neoprene hose, is stated to be over 30ft. Sellers' UK representatives are C.P. Equipment Ltd, Mill Green Rood, Mitcham, Surrey change of pressure, signalling of peak sound wave amplitudes, and warnings of excessive rates of climb or descent. Demonstrating Cargo Extraction USAF Tactical Air Command announced on March 6 the departure of a C-130 Hercules on a world tour to demonstrate to Air Force and Army commanders the operational readiness of the command's new extraction technique for aerial delivery of priority- supplies. Equipment for this system (illus trated and described in Flight International for November 29 last year) is produced by All American Engineering Co, Wilmington, Del. Extraction is effected by engagement of a hook with a wire across the runway, and TAC say that loads of up to 14,0001b may now be "snatched" without damage. The president of All American Engineering Co, Mr. Charles W. Wendt, said recently that tests of an arresting system for civil aircraft had been completed. Inflatable Radomes Large inflatable radomes which can be para-dropped in combat zones and erected by six-man crews in 30min have been developed by Goodyear Aviation Products Division. Made of Hypalon-coated nylon, they were built for Westinghouse Electric Corp, Baltimore, Md, prime contractor for the USAF and Marine Corps' paraballoon radar antenna programmes. Westinghouse is producing radar antennae and electronic gear for the system. Radomes of two sizes. 52ft and 61ft in diameter, were built to protect the anten na from wind and weather. They may be divided into as many as seven sections, which are joined together on the ground with clips and stud fasteners, then inflated. Entrance to an inflated radome is gained through an air lock. US Component Contracts Contracts worth nearly $6£m have been placed with Fletcher Aviation and Sargent Engineering Corp, subsidiaries of A. J. Industries Inc. The Aeronautical Systems Division, Wright Patterson AFB, Ohio, has awarded a prime contract valued at $5,400,000 to Fletcher Aviation, El Monte, Cal, for 5,614 pylon wing tanks of 450gal capacity, for use on the F-105 Thunderchief. These tanks, designed by Fletcher, are to be delivered this year. Previously, the company built 5,800 wing tanks under an Air Force contract. Sargent Engineering Corp, Huntington Park, Cal, have received contracts totalling nearly $lm for actuators, gearboxes, and wing flap components to be used by Lock heed Georgia Division in the construction of C-130 Hercules aircraft for the USAF. Raylon hangar door manufactured by Raynor Manufacturing Co, Dixon, III, using Filoplated translucent Fibreglass panels mounted in lightweight aluminium frames. These panels, which it is said give a 60-75 per cent weight saving compared with wooden or steel doors, are manufactured by Filon Corp, Hawthorne, Cal. The doors have a removable centre post enabling them to be made to any width and up to a height of20ft
