FLIGHT International, 11 April 1963 511 WORLD AIRLINE SURVEY Air St Pierre is a French-Canadian carrier uiat began operations in 1961 of a daily service between Sydney (Nova Scotia) and St Pierre (Miquelon Island), which is French territory. Head Office: St Pierre, Miquelon Island, Canada. Fleet: Cessna 310. Air Vietnam was founded in 1951 to take over domestic and regional services previously operated by Air France. The Vietnamese Government holds 75 per cent of the stock and Air France holds 25 per cent. Air Vietnam flies domestic services and to Laos, Cambodia, Hong Kong and Bangkok. Mrlines of New South Wales Pty Ltd was until December 18, 1959, known as Butler Air Transport Pty Ltd, which was founded in 1934 to operate a Charleville - Cootamundra service connecting with the Imperial Airways/Qantas Lngland - Australia route. The airline was registered as a public company in 1952, and early in 1958 control of it and of its subsidiary, Queensland Airlines, passed to Ansett Trans port Industries Ltd. Ansett Flying Boat Services Pty Ltd has now been integrated with Airlines of New South Wales and operates Sandringhams between Sydney and Lord Howe Island as well as on inclusive tour flights to Lake Eucumbene in the Snowy Mountains. Airlines of New South Wales operates about 9.000 miles of routes from Sydney to towns in New South Wales and Queensland. An extension of the Sydney - Broken Hill route to Alice Springs NT was operated until September 1960, when the service was transferred to Ansett-ANA, who now operate the service from Melbourne. Airlines of New Zealand Ltd, also known as South Pacific Airlines of New Zealand Ltd, was formed in 1961 by pilots of NZNAC; Ansctt Transport Industries has secured a minority holding in it. Airlines of New Zea land flies in direct competition with NZNAC over a network linking Auckland to 15 other towns in New Zealand, but offers fares slightlv lower than NZNAC's. Airlines of South Australia Pty Ltd is the name now adopted by Guinea Airways Ltd which operates services radiating from Adelaide to points in South Australia. New South Wales and Victoria. Services are also operated to the Woomera missile range. Originally formed in 1927 to provide air transport to the goldfields just discovered in New Guinea, after 1945 the company's operations centred on Adelaide. In 1959 Guinea Holdings, the holding com pany for Guinea Airways and Guinea Invest ments Ltd was taken over by Ansett Transport Industries Ltd. Head Office: Adelaide Airport, Adelaide. Fleet: one Convair440, four DC-3. one Piaggio P.166-BPortofino. Airnautic started charter operations in Europe in 1958, and has since operated scheduled services for Air Inter and Air France. The company concentrates on freight charters and inclusive tour flights, and its operations base is at Nice. Air France has recently acquired a majority shareholding in Airnautic. Airways (India) Ltd is entirely engaged on non-scheduled charter flying. Frequent ser vices are operated to the Andaman Islands and charter flights to Assam and North Bengal are undertaken. Alaska Airlines Inc adopted its present title in 1944, having been founded in 1937 as Star Air Lines Inc to take over Star Air Service, which had been doing charter work for several years. The latter had acquired McGee Airways, which was founded in 1932. In 1942 and 1943 Star Air Lines took over Pollack Air Lines, Lavery Airways and Mirow Air Service. Alaska Airlines has a route network stretching from Fairbanks and Anchorage to Nome and Kotzebue in the north-west, while the Convair 880 "Golden Nugget" services link Seattle to Fairbanks and Anchorage. Alaska Coastal-Ellis Airlines operates a network of domestic services based on Juneau and Prince Rupert. Alaska Coastal Airlines was formed in 1939 as a partnership by Alaska Air Transport, founded in 1935. and Marine Airways, founded in the following year. Alaska Coastal's Super Catalinas differ from standard in being modified to CAB Transport Category requirements. Two 1,900 h.p. Wright R-2600 Cyclones are fitted instead of Twin Wasps, improving cruising speed and single-engine performance. In place of the blister turrets, special Sun Domes are fitted to give passengers a picture window view of the scenery. Alaska Coastal merged in April 1962. with Ellis Airlines and the merged carrier is known as Alaska Coastal-Ellis Airlines. Head Office: 2 Marine Way, Juneau. Alaska. Executives: S. B. Fleet: four Super Catalina. 15 Goose, one Bellanca Pacemaker seaplane, three Cessna 180 seaplanes, one Cessna 185 seaplane, one Howard DGA-l 5P seaplane. Alitalia—Linee Aeree Italiane was originally formed in 1946 as a joint British-Italian venture with BEA holding 30 per cent of the original capital. Additional capital was called up in 1955 and BEA sold one-third of its investment to BOAC. In 1957 Alitalia was merged with LAI, taking over its routes on November 1 that year, the capital being increased from L,4,500m to LI0,000m and later to L25,000m. BOAC returned its share to BEA which then had a 6.75 per cent holding; this was bought by Alitalia in 1961. Alitalia operates a Euro pean network, domestic services in Italy and routes to South, North, West and East Africa, Brazil, Uruguay, Argentina, Chile, Venezuela, Canada, the US, the Middle East, Pakistan and India. A service to Darwin and Sydney was inaugurated on June 16, 1961, at first using DC-8s chartered from TAI. and in March 1962 a service to Hong Kong and Tokyo was introduced via Teheran, Karachi, Bombay and Bangkok. Caravelle services started on May 25, 1960, from Rome to Lon don, and DC-8 services to Canada and the USA in June 1960 and to South Africa in November.
