Avalon Air Transport Inc operates scheduled services within California between Santa Catalina Island, Long Beach and Los Angeles. Head Office: Long Beach, California, USA. Executives: Wilton R. Aviacion y Comercio SA—Aviaco or AYC was founded as a private non-scheduled operator in 1948; scheduled operations began in 1950. Routes radiate from Madrid to points on the Spanish mainland and from Madrid and Barcelona to the Balearic Isles. In North Africa Tangier, Casablanca and Algiers are served; there are also services from Spain and Casablanca to Las Palmas and Teneriffe. Aviaco also operates Marseilles - Majorca, Nice - Majorca and Seville - Lisbon services. An equipment interchange service with Sabena Caravelles is operated from Brussels to Madrid, Aviaco flying the Caravelle on to Las Palmas. There is also a separate Madrid - Las Palmas Caravelle service. Passenger services with DC-4s and DC-3s connect Las Palmas with El Aaiun, Morocco, Tenerife and Sidi Ifni, Spanish West Africa. Aviaca also operates inclusive tour flights to Britain in the summer. Iberia has a 66$ per cent holding in Aviaco. Head Office: Aduana 33, Madrid, Spain. Avianca—Aerovias Nacionales de Colombia SA claims to be the oldest airline in the Americas and. in fact, it was formed in 1940 as the result of a merger of SCADTA (founded in 1919) and Servicio Aereo Colombiano. SCADTA was founded by German interests but in 1931 Pan American Airways acquired an 80 per cent interest—now reduced to 38 per cent. Avianca operates an extensive domestic network and services to Mexico, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru. Jamaica, the USA, Puerto Rico, Panama, Spain, France and Germany. In April 1954 Avianca acquired the second largest Colombian airline, LANS A, and in 1952 also took over SAETA. More re cently, Avianca has acquired Sociedad Aerea del Tolima SA, and Aerotaxi is a wholly- owned subsidiary of Avianca. Another sub sidiary. Aviateca—Empress Guatemalteca de Aviacion was founded by the Guatemala Government in 1945 to take over Aerovias de Guatemala, which had been founded in 1939, and which began operating in 1940. The company operates about 3,700 miles of routes radiating from Guatemala City to points in Guatemala and also to Miami, New Orleans and Tapa- chula (Mexico). Head Office: Guatemala City. Avio Linee Sicilian! is an Italian carrier that acquired Herons in 1961 to operate a domestic network in Sicily, and routes to Reggio Calabria on the Italian mainland. Its share capital was held by the Banca di Sicilia, the Catania Savings Bank and the Catanian Chamber of Commerce. Alitalia was to have acquired a minority holding in Avio Linee Siciliani but agreement could not be reached with Alitalia about the takeover of local Sicilian services and Avio Linee Siciliani did not start operations. Head Office: Catania, Sicily. Fleet: three Heron 2. B & K Airways Inc operates charter and taxi services and air freight pick-up and delivery services. Scheduled services are operated from DuPage County Airport to Chicago's Midway and O'Hare Fields. Head Office: DuPage County Airport, West Chicago, Illinois, USA. Executives: W. W. Bahamas Air Traders Ltd operates charter services within the Bahamas and to Florida. Head Office: PO Box 1725, Nassau, Bahamas. Fleet: one Grumman Widgeon. Bahamas Airways Ltd was founded in 1936 to take over the operation of inter-island charter services begun in 1933. In 1943, Pan American Airways acquired a 45 per cent interest in the company but in 1949 Bahamas Airways was taken over by BSAA and later became a wholly owned BO AC subsidiary. In April 1959 BO AC sold 80 per cent of its shareholding to Skyways Bahamas Holding Co Ltd but in December 1960 the Corporation bought back this hold ing. In March 1956 Bahamas Airways in augurated a service to Grand Turk, Turks Island via San Salvador Island, Mayaguana and Great Inagua. The airline operates frequent inter-island services among the Bahamas and from Nassau and West End to Fort Lauderdale, Miami and West Palm Beach. Head Office: PO Box 65, Nassau, Bahamas, BWI. Swissair holds a 40 per cent financial interest, the Swiss Government 25 per cent and private interests 35 per cent. Charter flights within Europe and also to Buenos Aires, Montevideo, New York, Bombay and Johannesburg have been made. Two ex-Swissair DC-6Bs have now been added to the fleet. Bavaria Fluggesellschaft is a charier operator flying cargo services for Deutsche Lufthansa between Hamburg, Bremen, Hanover, Frank furt, Stuttgart, Nuremburg and Munich using DC-3s acquired from Lufthansa. Fleet: two DC-3, two Apache, one Beech D-18S. BC Air Lines Ltd operates regular services on the British Columbia coast mainland and around the west coast of Vancouver Island. Also offered are irregular, charter and tech nical services in British Columbia, as well as international charter flights. Head Office: Vancouver Airport, BC, Canada. Executives: J. F. Fleet: three Mallard, one Goose, ten Beaver, two Norseman, four Cessna 180, two Cessna 170. Belgian International Air Services is a charter operator that commenced operations in 1959. IT flights to this country have been under taken, but the DC-4s owned by BIAS are now flying in the Congo for the United Nations. Head Office: Antwerp Airport, Belgium. Executives: C. G. Van Antwerpen, commer cial director; G. Richardson, technical direc tor. Fleet: three DC-4. On order: one DC-6. BKS Air Transport Ltd, formed in 1952, and takingitsname from the initials of its founders. Messrs Barnby, Keegan and Stevens, operates an extensive network of scheduled services, both seasonal and year-round within Britain and to Europe, serving Basle, Belfast, Bilbao. Dublin, Guernsey, Jersey, Leeds/Bradford, London, Newcastle and Ostend. In 1963. BKS introduced "Book Now—Schedule Later" facilities on all Channel Islands services with considerable success. In October 1962, BKS introduced the Avro 748 into service on the London - Leeds, Bradford route: the company has recently announced its intention to extend Avro 748 services to the Leeds/Bradford - Belfast route from March 1963. In the first three months of Avro 748 operation, passenger traffic on the London - Leeds/Bradford route increased by 94 per cent. BKS also carry out charter and inclusive tour flights, the latter in conjunction with well-known travel agencies, and the company has been responsible for extensive develop ment of the air-freighting of racehorses and brood mares. BKS Engineering Ltd has bases at Southend, Leeds/Bradford and Newcastle, and under take contract maintenance, overhauls, repairs and modifications.
