590 FLIGHT International, 25 April 1963 WORLD E W S VJ-10IC Flies The first free flight by the German VJ- 10IC aircraft took place successfully on April 10. Powered by swivelling Rolls- Royce RB.145 pods at the tips of the wings, supplemented by RB.108 lift engines in the fuselage, the aircraft has been designed and built by the Entwicklungsring Siid, an organization based in Munich charged by the Bonn Government with the develop ment of a variety of projects. It has no capital, and VJ-10IC work has been carried out by teams contributed to the Ring by Bolkow, Heinkel and Messerschmitt. As the only German V/STOL aircraft programme to reach the hardware stage, the VJ-101 has been of considerable political importance. It has passed through a number of metamorphoses, and the 10IC has already been overtaken on paper by the radically different 10ID planned around later Rolls-Royce engines (fairly obviously, the RB.153 and RB.162). The 10IC began its tethered trials last summer, and may well be seen at the Paris Show in June. 25th Paris Show The title of this year's Paris Show (Le Bourget, June 6-16) will be Salon Inter national de L'Aeronautique et de L'Espace (International Air and Space Show) be cause for the first time France will have a space exhibition, with 37 participants. This will be located next to the United States space exhibition. The organizers state that this year's show promises to break all records, with nearly 400 exhibitors from 15 countries taking part. A hundred aircraft will be on static show and about 300 machines of all types will be demonstrated during the week. Main flying demonstra tions are on the last two days. Belfast to Bavaria? This Short Brothers & Hariand model of a design study for a V/STOL strike aircraft was built several years ago. It is resurrected here to provide an indication of the appearance of the German VJ-I0IC, which flew on April 10 (see col I) Australia's First Mirage At a ceremony at Bordeaux on April 9, the first-Dassault Mirage III O was form ally handed over to the Royal Australian Air Force by M B. C. Vallieres, president and managing director of GAM Dassault. It was accepted by Gp Capt R. T. Susans, RAAF Air Attache in Paris, and demon strated by Dassault test pilot J. M. Saget. Going Up for Down Under First take-off, by GAMD test pilot M Buge, of the first Mirage 1110 for the RAAF (see news item). Powered by a SNECMA Atar 9C, and equipped with CSF radar, the aircraft differs but little from the basic IllC (the kangaroo in the RAAF roundel is painted largely on the auxiliary intake, which appears here as an open black rectangle) USAFE Reorganization British-based units of USAFE (United States Air Forces in Europe) are being re-assigned to 3rd Air Force HQ at Ruislip from 17th Air Force HQ at Ramstein, Germany, to which they were assigned in 1961. This change, announced last week, is part of a "realignment of command structure" by USAFE to reduce manpower. Units affected in the UK are the three tactical fighter wings — at Wethersfield (20th), Lakenheath (48th) and Bentwaters (81st); the 10th Tactical Reconnaissance Wing at Alconbury; and the 7375th Com bat Support Group and 420th Air Refuel ling Sqn, at Sculthorpe. Third Air Force is also to assume responsibility for Toul AFB, France, because the 10th Tactical Recon naissance Wing has units there. These changes, it is stated, "will have no adverse effect on the combat capabilities or posture of the command." RAF Germany Command Air Marshal Sir Ronald Lees, KCB, CBE, DFC, is to be Commander-in-Chief, RAF Germany, from June 25. He has been Deputy Chief of the Air Staff since July 1960, and is being succeeded in that post from June 5 by AVM C. H. Hartley, CB, CBE, DFC, AFC, at present Assistant Chief of the Air Staff (Operational Re quirements). An Australian, Air Marshal Lees was Senior Air Staff Officer of Figh ter Command before becoming DC AS. Malayan Air Force Herons As forecast last January, the Royal Malayan Air Force have ordered two de Havilland Herons from Hawker Siddeley Aviation. They will be used for communica tions and general duties, augmenting the four Doves which have been in RMAF service since 1961. Delivery is scheduled for this summer. Integrated ATC Integration of civil and military United Kingdom air traffic control services was a main theme for speakers at the recent Guild of Air Traffic Control Officers' dinner (House of Commons, April 6); and it was further emphasized by the fact that the new Master, Wg Cdr K. Crosby, is the first member of the Services to hold this office, while the guest of honour was also from the RAF—Air Chief Marshal Sir Edmund Hudleston, AOC-in-C Trans port Command, who said that although both civil and military aviation had separate roles they shared the same airspace and must co-operate to be successful. The master emphasized Guild support
