Shadowed by Phantom This strange formation—a Tu-95 "Bear" long-range recon naissance aircraft and a McDonnell F-4B Phantom 2—could be seen near USS "Constella tion" when the carrier was some 600 miles south-west of Midway Island on March 16. As recorded in this journal on March 28, the big Russian was picked up by radar more than 200 miles out VC10 Modification Programme A Vickers spokesman earlier this week described as "not true" reports that pre liminary results of the drag-reduction test programme had shown the modifications to be inadequate. According to the spokesman, the test programme—which so far has involved only the fifth VC10—is continuing from Wisley. This aircraft recently landed back at Weybridge for further modification work. Israeli Mirages At Haifa on Monday of last week Israelis had their first sight of their country's Mirage III fighters, 27 of which took part in a flypast over Haifa to celebrate Israel's 15th Independence Day. Memo on French Aviation After a detailed survey of all aspects of French aviation, the Air League has pub lished an informative and carefully edited booklet which examines the growth and structure of the industry. Its only shortcoming is that the figures given are used directly as supplied by the USIAS without inter pretation (which is particularly necessary in defining what is meant by "exports"). HonACGi, FRS, who, as announced last week (World News. May 2), has been elected to a Fellowship of the Imperial College of Science and Techno logy, London, is vice-chairman and manag ing director of the Hawker Siddeley Group Ltd. He was formerly (1959-1963) manag ing director of Bristol Siddeley Engines and is now vice-chairman of that company. East-West Pacific Attempt Mrs Betty Miller, an American flying instructor, on May 1 successfully completed the first leg of a flight from California to Australia, in an attempt to become the first woman to fly solo east-to-west across the Pacific. (A west-to-east crossing from Honolulu to California was made by Miss Amelia Earhart in a Lockheed Vega, 28 years ago.) In a Piper Apache which she is delivering to Brisbane. Mrs Miller flew from Oakland. Calif, to Hawaii in just over 17hr. She took off from Honolulu last Sunday, May 5. on the second leg of her flight, to Canton Island. Airedale to Australia A Beagle Airedale, G-ASBI. is due to leave London Heathrow next Wednesday (May 15) on a flight to Australia. Flying it are Lord Trefgarne (22) and Mr Charles Masefield (23). said to be the youngest pilots ever to have attempted a journey of this distance—12,000 miles—in a light single- engined aircraft. They hope to reach Darwin by July 1. Lord Trefgarne is the stepson of Cdr Anthony Courtney, MP, and Charles Masefield the son of Mr Peter Masefield. managing director of Beagle. Spanwise, the wing of the two-seater machine being constructed as an entry for the €5,000 Kremer Prize competition by the Southend Man Powered Aircraft Group measures no less than 90ft. The design hos received a £750 construction grant from the Royal Aeronautical Society MPAG. Crew will be BUA pilot Barry Stacey and Olympic cyclist Karl Barton
