Ideally the whole post-war period ought to be examined; but the task of obtaining accurate and complete accident data for 15 countries—remarkably difficult even in respect of recent years—increases as the researcher goes back in time. The accident tables list all crashes since January 1, 1953, to transport-category aircraft of over 12,5001b a.u.w. registered in the 15 countries concerned which occurred to revenue flights, scheduled or non-scheduled, and which killed one or more occupants, passengers or crew. This list is a Flight International compilation, derived from a number of sources, and is believed to be complete. Next, total air transport production, scheduled and non-scheduled, was assessed for each country for the ten years 1953 to 1962. The source for this was the ICAO Digest of Traffic Statistics 1947-1961 No 90, with ICAO's recently published provisional scheduled figures for 1962. Estimates for non-scheduled c.t.m. in 1962 were made by factoring up the 1961 figures by 20 per cent. This is a generous increase, compared with the 15 per cent increase in sched uled c.t.m., but it errs on the right side, and in any case the number concerned is only a small fraction of the total c.t.m. produced in the ten years considered.
