Items on show are: a comprehensive range of approved aircraft relays, including types interchangeable with American standard configuration; telemetry instruments, includ ing angular accelerometers; double axes incidence heads; geological aerial survey recorder; impulse distributor; and rotary switches. Test equipment includes a flame- proofness testing chamber, an explosive atmosphere detector and an extension cable reel. Among these are some draftless forgings for the F-104; forgings for the Caravelle main and nosewheel undercarriages; and blades for Hispano-Suiza. Other forgings are for the Transall, Mirage III, Atlantic and Friendship. Extrusions are as supplied to Fokker and other European constructors. Sheet exhibits are in Hiduminium R.R.58 aluminium alloy, one of the original Rolls- Royce series of alloys used in gas turbine engines and airframes. There are also other examples in steel, titanium and nickel alloys, illustrating the company's various forging techniques. The makers claim that this has hands-off handling characteristics which surpass those of many fixed-wing air craft, by virtue of the newly developed auto matically stabilized rotor system which permits hovering and forward flight to be accomplished, without change of attitude, with the pilot's hands removed from the controls. The high inertia of the wider rotor blades permits low descent rates in autorotative landings and allows power-off landing from any height. It has been demonstrated that the L4 can even accomplish lift-off without engine power, using the energy stored in the turning blades. The engine is a 305 h.p. Martin-Baker Aircraft Co Ltd are repre sented on the Hispano-Suiza stand by Society d'Exploitation des Materiels Martin-Baker. On show are variations of the French-produced Mk AM 4 ejection seats for the various Mirage aircraft. Typical of the current Mk 4 range, these incorporate all the latest developments from the firm which has specialized in aircrew escape equipment for the last 19 years. In addition to these French-manufactured seats Martin-Baker are exhibiting one of their latest products fitted with a rocket pack. The rocket-assisted ejection seat is similar in out ward appearance to the Mk 4 and 5 seats at present in service. The design embodies a patented rocket pack installed in the underside of the seat pan, the thrust of the rocket aug menting that of the conventional telescopic ejection gun. However, due to the tremendous reserve of power in the rocket pack it has been found possible to reduce the charges in the gun, thus bringing down the g forces involved from the usual 20g to about 15g. Similarly the rate of rise of g has been reduced to less than 200g per second, which results in a much softer ride and eliminates the risk of injury to the pilot during ejection. Atterrisseurs.
