Magnesium Elektron Ltd, Lumn's Lane, Clifton Junction, Swinton, Manchester, Eng land. Stand C.J80. This company is showing examples of the use of magnesium in aircraft, aero-engines and spacecraft. The most interesting exhibit is the Mercury tape recorder used by Col Glenn on his historic flight. This is being loaned from America and is composed almost entirely of magnesium alloys, mainly because of their light weight and rigidity. Stand C.178. Sand- and shell-castings in magnesium alloy. Marconi's Wireless Telegraph Co Ltd, Marconi House, Chelmsford, Essex, England. Stand C.30. Exhibited is a full range of products designed for aeronautical use, both on the ground and in the air. The display highlights the very successful Sixty Series of airline radio equip ment which is now winning orders throughout the world. Another important Marconi development accorded a prominent place on the stand is the new "daylight radar display," recently evalu ated successfully by the British Ministry of Aviation. A separate display demonstrates the latest advances in radar data displays, empha sizing the contribution that inter-trace identi fication marks on the normal radar picture, coupled with alpha-numeric data displays and ultimately with computers, will make to simpler air traffic control and greater safety in the air. Closed-circuit television is displayed, and its various applications, both airborne and ground-based, are illustrated by photographs and by a display of slides showing different aspects of television in aviation. This display is supported by a commentary in four langu ages. Aircraft fire-protection equipment; con nectors for systems and electronic equipment; pyrotechnic equipment. Protection des avions contre I'incendie. Con- necteurs pour I' aironautique et Vilectronique. Equipements pyrotechniques. The Martin Company, Friendship International Airport 40, Maryland, USA. Stand A.28. Prominently featured on the Martin stand is the Pegasus multi-purpose space booster—a fully guided vehicle capable of lifting a variety of payload weights to altitudes of 100-3,000 nautical miles. Such a vehicle would provide a medium for component and sub-system test ing; high-altitude probes; zero g, vacuum and acceleration testing; photo or flare mapping; reconnaissance; surveillance; and re-entry testing of materials, components and sub systems. Also displayed is a SNAP nuclear auxiliary generator, which is the power source for the US Navy's Transit navigational satellite systems, and RACEP, a versatile radio-tele phone communications system. Other items are test and training equipment for aircraft and missile check-out, marine distance-measuring equipment, and a transponder buoy, which is an anti-submarine detection system. S.A. Engins Matra, 49 Rue de Lisbonne, Paris 8e, France. Stand A.6 and external. Most important product of this company is the R.530 collision-course air-to-air guided weapon, now coming into production for the French Air Force (for use by Mirage III squadrons) and customers outside France. On view are both versions of this missile, one with a semi-active radar homing head by GAM Dassault and the other with an infra-red homing head by SAT; other R.530 contri butors include CSF, TRT and Brandt. The earlier R.511 air-to-air missile, with semi- active radar guidance, is in use by the French Air Force (Vautour) and Navy (Aquilon). Matra have also developed more than 40 types of launcher for unguided rockets of several calibres and nationalities. These launchers, of which at least 15 types are displayed, include designs for light aircraft and helicopters as well as others suitable for external carriage at Mach 2; and several models make provision for the accommodation of fuel, as well as rockets. One type of launcher on view is a seven-tube pattern adopted as standard for Royal Navy helicopters, and to be manu factured by Matra's British licensee, Thomas French & Sons Ltd. Also featured at the Salon are the GAP- Matra M-360 Jupiter "push-pull" 4/5 seat light aircraft designed by Moynet, and such diverse products as infra-red early warning systems, automatic checkout equipment (of de Havil- land design) and electromagnetic clutches and brakes.
