Elle est liee par des accords tech niques et commerciaux avec plusieurs firmes d'Europe et des USA. Members of this organization include Sud-Aviation, Nord-Aviation, SNECMA, ONERA, Dassault, Matra and SEPR, and its functions are the study, construction and test of ballistic vehicles and space vehicles. The organization is responsible for the following vehicles: Topaze, Agate, Emeraude, Safirand Diamant. The Agate has the most powerful solid-propellant motor yet tested in Europe. Diamant is in effect a prototype of a French military ballistic missile, intended to have a nuclear warhead. (See also "Late News and Amendments".) When, in 1959, it was announced that agree ment had been reached between Belgium, France, Germany, Italy and the Netherlands to spend about $440m of their own defence funds to build the American Raytheon Hawk air-defence missile system, an industrial organization was established. Named as above, this organization obtained as its first task the execution of the European Hawk programme, acting as European prime con tractor. The other national prime contractors are: Telefunken GmbH, for Germany; Ateliers de Constructions Electriques de Charleroi, for Belgium; Compagnie Francaise Thomson-Houston (CFTH), for France; Societa Finanziaria Meccanica(Finmeccanica), for Italy; N. V. Philips' Gloeilampenfabrieken, for the Netherlands. In all there are some 63 important sub-contractors in the five partici pating European countries, all directly respon sible to their national prime contractors. Production of rocket motors has been con tracted by SETEL to Direction des Poudres, Paris, and Aerochemie, Rome. At Paris are shown a Hawk launcher, together with three missiles and radar.
