948 FLIGHT International, 13 June l%l INDUSTRY International Flight Systems Company News Great Britain PRODUCTS Trident Warning Switches Temperature sensitive switches manufactured by Engel & Gibbs, Elstree Way, Boreham Wood, Herts, are used in the de Havilland Trident <subject of a detailed description in Flight International for May 2) for excessive-tem perature warning in the alternator field windings and associated fluid driving unit. They are also used for insertion in the main hydraulic tanks to give warning should the temperature of the system rise above safety level. The temperature sensitive switch unit is fitted with a sprung head which keeps in •direct contact with the alternator field windings and will adjust itself to manu facturing differences. Normal setting is 175°C, to make contact on the rising temperature and operate warning lamps and relays. The fluid driving unit tempera ture sensitive switch is fitted into the Hobson constant speed fluid drive and monitors the temperature of the fluid. Should a fault or overload occur in the drive and the hydraulic fluid temperature rise above safety level, the switch is set at 115°C to make contact on a rising tem perature and operate warning lamps and relays. The Engel & Gibbs unit in the main hydraulic tanks in the Trident is made of stainless steel and normal setting is 90CC to make contact on a rising temperature and operate warning lamps and relays should the temperature of the system rise above safety level. Connections are made to the switch by means of a Cannon receptacle subminiature connector. To mention only a few, there are electrical tapes to withstand high voltages and temperatures; tapes with an adhesive which sets hard when subjected to heat; masking tapes for the aircraft and motor industries; surface- protection masks (which leave no trace of adhesive when removed) to protect highly finished surfaces; a rayon-reinforced band- Empire Test Pilots' School visitors to Boulton Paul Aircraft Ltd at Wolverhampton listening to Mr L.
