Air-Cushion Vehicles FLIGHT International supplement, 28 February 1963 C. S. Cockerel! THE COCKERELL PAPERS Part One ON THE FIRST PAGE of the first issue of Air-Cushion Vehicles we remarked:— "There must be many among our readers who, since boyhood, have dreamed of massive sea-going craft which somehow contrive to rise above the wavetops. Somehow . . . Today we know how; and the air-cushion affords not only a new dimension in over-water travel but comes as 'a release from the wheel' for overland employment. This visionary reference to the wheel, we believe, first appeared in the columns of Flight, heading a contribution by Mr Christopher Cockerell, whose name is recognized as that of a true pioneer. It is our hope that we shall be able to print many other such historic contributions in this new journal, to complement the regular features inaugurated in this issue." That hope is now fulfilled. Jointly with Hovercraft Development Ltd, of which he is a director, Mr Cockerell has made available to Air-Cushion Vehicles a set of his earliest reports and memoranda. Abstracts of these have been prepared by the technical editor and are now presented, together with direct quotations, commentaries and relevant illustrations.
