Air-Cushion Vehicles FLIGHT International supplement, 27 June 1963 si vital BREAKTHROUGH Fitted with 4 ft. 'skirts' SR.N1 skips easily at 30 knots over a rock groyne 3 ft. 6in. high. Greatly-improved over-wave and obstacle-clearance capability, with no increase in size or installed power. Commercially-practical payloads and performance for small A C Vs. Wider amphibious and overland applications for all AC Vs. ...three vitally important results of a recent dramatic advance by Westland designers —the successful engineering of longer versions of the already outstanding, Westland-patented flexible 'skirt'. With a 4ft. 'skirt' fitted, Britain's first A C V, the Westland SR.N1, can easily clear solid obstacles up to 3ft. 6 in. high (as against 9 in. previously), ditches 8ft. deep and 12ft. wide, and a sheer 6ft. drop. Overwater, it can operate in sea conditions till now completely beyond its capabilities. A new Westland A C V, the 7-ton SR.N5, carries no less than ten times the payload of SR.N1, although its all-up weight is the same. Its over-wave and obstacle-clearance capability is much superior to that of a 40-ton craft without a 'skirt'. With this new breakthrough in ACV development, Westland is confident that a 200-ton ACV, fitted with 10-15 ft. 'skirts' could be truly ocean-going, whereas previously 1,000 tons was considered the minimum size for an ocean-going ACV. Already in the advanced project stage is the 170-ton, 600-passenger SR.N4, capable of providing a fast, flexible ferry service across the English Channel. ?W WESTLAND HIGH RIDING ACVs WESTLAND AIRCRAFT Incorporating: Saunders-Roe Division • LIMITED YEOVIL ENGLAND •ristol Helicopter Division • Fairey Aviation Division
