Among the aviation products ofSociete Hispano- Suiza (Bois-Colombes, Seine, France) are land ing-gear assemblies for the Breguet Atlantic. Illustrated here is the operation of the ingenious self-locking strut employed in the actuator ensure that the load is re-applied smoothly. A clock system has been devised that enables the rupture time of each test-piece to be recorded. FLIGHT International, 11 July 1963 71 tooling plate which is used mainly for the production of formers. Wiring Cable Documentation BICC (British Insulated Callender's Cables Ltd), PO Box 5, 21 Bloomsbury Street, London WC1, have published brochures describing three new types of aircraft wiring cables— Efglas (418B), Nypren (420B) and Tersil (421B). In addition to illustrated descrip tions, the brochures contain relevant data tables. COM PANY NEWS Hamburg Airport Extensions Recently the third of three new administrative and reception buildings, prefabricated in the UK and erected by British labour, was com pleted at Hamburg Airport. They are being used to house the airport police and accounts departments and as an overspill passenger lounge. Covering an area of 10,400 sq ft, the extensions represent £35,000 worth of business for Terrapin Ltd, London and Bletchley. The three blocks are made up of 52 Terrapin pack (pre-fabricated) units, each of which can be folded up and re-erected on a new site as occasion demands. Alternativ ely the buildings can be increased or de creased in size by adding or taking-away individual units. "Arctic" crew suits made by Jeltek Ltd, Green Lane, Hounslow, Middx, are being worn by these men working on an open test stand at the Spadeadam Rocket Establishment new edition, may be obtained free, on request, from the company's Public Rela tions Division, Bushbury, Wolverhampton, Staffs, or from any company depot. Stress-relieved Plate A leaflet (Publica tion No 48) dealing with stress-relieved aluminium plate for the aircraft industry has been produced by James Booth Aluminium Ltd, from whom copies may be obtained at Kitts Green Works Birming ham 33. Illustrations show plate being ultrasonically inspected for internal defects, prior to being controlled-stretched on the 4,000-ton stretcher. A comprehensive table gives the four main Duralumin alloys, details the minimum mechanical properties of the stress-relieved plate (which is used by customers mainly for machining into mtegral skins and spar sections) and lists the dimensional and weight limitations as 38ft long, 7ft wide, 5 Jin thick, cross- sectional area of 200sq in or 3 tons in weight. Similar details are given for stress-relieved Goodyear History In their illustrated booklet The Story of the Tyre, the Good year Tyre and Rubber Co (Gt Britain) Ltd, recall, in referring to tyres for aircraft, that they introduced nylon in aircraft tyre construction "to withstand the enor mous stresses and strains of the developing modern aeroplane." They add that changes in aircraft speeds, limits in available space and greatly increased plane loads have somewhat modified the trend to large- section, low-pressure tyres. "Small tyre sections are now carrying enormous loads and Goodyear's research scientists and engineers are working constantly to provide even better aviation landing gear to meet the needs of the modern jet aircraft industry." Copies of the booklet, now published in a Metal Industry Handbook The Metal Industry Handbook and Directory 1963, 52nd edition of this comprehensive guide to the metal industry, has recently been published by Iliffe Books Ltd, Dorset House, Stamford Street, London SE1, at 21s net and contains full details of over 700 British proprietary non-ferrous alloys. The section on prop erties of metals gives up-to-date information on the occurrence, extraction, properties and uses of 54 metals, while the principal metals and their alloys are covered in separate sections. All British Standard specifications dealing with non-ferrous metals are abstracted, as are also DDT specifications covering the same field. The trade names section and directory for buyers have both been enlarged. Right Refuelling Ltd recently completed the hundredth Meteor F. 8 target drone conversion (12 are here seen lined up at Tarrant Rushton).
