74 FLIGHT International, 11 July 1963 Whirlwinds of 225 Sqn operating from a site on Brunswick Lawns, Hove, Sussex, during the time special helicopter services were being provided during President Kennedy's stay at birch Grove. This photograph was taken by a reader, Mr G. Van Raalte SERVICE AVIATION Air Force, Naval and Army Flying News Hellenic Accompaniment six JAVELINS OF 41 SQN, from RAF Wat- tisham, were to escort the Comet bringing the King and Queen of the Hellenes to Britain last Tuesday (July 9), meeting the Royal aircraft three miles off Abbeville and accompanying it as far as Lydd, Kent. The squadron is commanded by Wg Cdr J. F. Pinnington. The King of the Hellenes was to visit the Royal Navy today (July 11) and was being flown by a helicopter of the Queen's Flight from London to HMS Vernon, Portsmouth. No 78's Seven Years EQUIPPED WITH TWIN PIONEERS, No 78 Sqn has recently completed seven years' un broken service in Aden. Based at RAF Khormaksar and commanded by Sqn Ldr F. Rimmer, 78 is a short-range transport squadron supporting army units throughout the Federation of South Arabia, and apart from this primary role has done much to stimulate Anglo-Arab friendship by its readiness in carrying-out mercy missions— picking up a sick child at Dhala, an injured Arab civilian at Laudar, a Federal Army soldier at Ataq needing an emergency oper ation, an expectant mother from Mahfidh. No request is ignored and by day and night one of the squadron's aircraft and a crew is at stand-by, thus fulfilling the squadron's motto "Nemo non paratus"—"Always Ready." The Queen has approved the award of a standard to the squadron, which re-formed in Aden with Prestwick Pioneers in 1956 and in April 1962 was 25 years old. Five STOL Years NO 84 SQN (BLACKBURN.^ BEVERLEYS), re cently completed five years' service in Aden. In this time they have carried over 60,000 passengers and some 20,000 tons of freight, have flown nearly 2m miles throughout the Middle East and played a major role in operations in Kuwait, East African floods and last year's Brunei revolt. Major roles of the squadron, which is commanded by Sqn Ldr K. J. Parfit, and has been at Khormaksar since January 1957, have been route-flying to the Persian Gulf and supply ing the Federal Regular Army—formerly Aden Protectorate Levies—at up-country posts, where the Beverleys have justified their STOL capabilities. Brunei Bravery FOR HIS "outstanding courage, determina tion and skill" in landing a Beverley with 80 troops on board, at night on a rebel- dominated airfield in Brunei, Sqn Ldr M. G. Bennett, DFC, who commands 34 Sqn, has been awarded a Queen's Commendation for Valuable Service in the Air. A similar award goes to a captain on the squadron, based at Seletar, Fit Lt M. G. Fenn. Other Brunei awards announced in the London Gazette recently were Mentions in Dispatches to Wg Cdrs J. P. Ford, AFC, J. R. C. H. Graves and W. J. P. Straker, AFC; Sqn Ldr R. C. Etheridge, DFC; Fit Lts J. J. Harvey and N. Lamb; Cpls M. J. Jeffreys, J. J. McCcrmack and J. C. F. Sarchett; and Cpl Tech D. Baker. Landsberg Disbandment THE RAF TRAINING MISSION to the Federal German Air Force at Landsberg, Bavaria, has been disbanded. More than a thousand student pilots and about 120 flying instruc tors have been trained at Landsberg since the RAF mission, subject of an illustrated article in Flight International for June 14 last year, went there nearly four years ago.
