92 FLIGHT International, 18 July 196. Yak-18 trainers, designed originally for td Soviet Air Force, are now also used extensive/ in a number of other Communist countrie These two belong to a Polish aero club SPORT AND BUS! ESS Elstree Under the Weather The appalling weather of Saturday, July 6, effectively washed out the flying display planned by the London School of Flying and Elstree Flying Club. Despite the weather, however, David Morgan arrived in the morning in Spitfire 5b AB910; the previous evening one of Elstree's private owners, Tim Davies, had arrived in his newly acquired Spitfire 9 from Belgium, so that on Saturday Elstree was unique in having two serviceable Spitfires on the aerodrome. Members of the Meteor acrobatic team from Manby, who had positioned at Bovingdon in preparation for the display, joined members in the club at Elstree on the Saturday evening. It is possible that a second attempt to hold the display will be held in September. Jet Commander Progress The prototype Jet Commander had logged almost 50hr of flight time up to the end of last month. During June the aircraft was re-instrumented to record current and future flight-test data, and recent flights have included tests of the effectiveness of the Jet Commander's wing-mounted speed-brakes. "The separate braking system has been added," the company re ports, "to provide unproved slow-down characteristics and to avoid over-complicating the main gear system as was originally projected to fulfil this need." Aero Commander Inc state that an acceleration time of ten seconds from standstill to rotation, using 100 per cent r.p.m., has been repeatedly accomplished. At a speed of only 250kt the aircraft climbed from a field altitude of 1,178ft above sea level to a pressure altitude of 35,000ft in lOmin lOsec from standstill. During stalls the machine has been found to be free from flame-out regardless of the aircraft's altitude, attitude or flight condition. Deliberate engine shut-down and restarts have been accomplished without incident or without hot starts up to 33,OOOft. Brantly Time By July 1, Brantly helicopters imported by British Executive Air Services Ltd had completed more than 2,000 flying hours, of which more than 1,000 hours had been logged on ab initio and conversion training courses, including Air Ministry and PIA contracts.
