150 FLIGHT International, 25 July 1%) INDUSTRY International Flight Systems Products Company News Great Britain FLIGHT SYSTEMS MoA Orders SSR The Ministry of Aviation has placed an order with Cossor Electronics Ltd for four secondary radar ground installations for use on United Kingdom airways. Two will be installed on the two Marconi S.264 radars at London Heathrow, one on the radar at Ventnor, Isle of Wight, and the fourth on the radar at Ash, in Kent, This represents the first large-scale application of civil secondary radar in Europe. Trials with the Cossor equipment were completed at London Air port many months ago and one unit has also been on trial at Orly for some time. As a result of joint efforts between Cossor and Raytheon Canada, with whom the British company is associated, 16 ground SSR units have been ordered by the Canadian Department of Transport. The Cossor equipment meets the MoA specific ation and the standards laid down by ICAO, with provision for automatic height report ing and a spare mode for future extension. Teleprinter Paper Winder International Aeradio Ltd have perfected—and applied for a patent on—an automatic teleprinter paper winder for mounting on fixed- or moving-carriage teleprinters, on any type of table or console, and in tropical con ditions. Single- or multi-ply paper can be wound automatically; and a release facility allows the rolled paper to be extracted for examination and automatically rewound. Its features are described below The roll can be quickly extracted and a new one inserted without adjustment. A "paper exhausted" warning can be provided. The synchronous motor has self-lubricating bearings and a minimum of maintenance is needed. ADF for Vampires The RNZAF has developed an installation for the Marconi AD.722 lightweght ADF in various marks of Vampire, and the details are now avail able to Marconi. The Royal Rhodesian Air Force is also interested. Various prob lems had to be overcome, particularly in Cossor Electronics ground secondary radar aerial on the CSF surveillance radar at Paris Orly airport (see first item) providing a weather-proof, aerodynamicaily clean aerial housing beneath the fuselage, avoiding discharge interference on the whip sense-aerial behind the canopy and avoiding interference from the inverter. A consider able number of AD.722s have now been sold and installed in a wide variety of high- performance aircraft, where they provide full ADF performance for very low weight and size. PRODUCTS Computing Aviation Problems Orders re cently placed with Electronic Associates Ltd, Burgess Hill, Sussex, for high accu racy analogue computers include one from English Electric Aviation Ltd for a PACE 231-R and one from Vickers-Armstrongs (Aircraft) Ltd for a TR-10. The English Electric computer will sup plement the comprehensive analogue com puting and simulation facility at Warton, where it will be used to study dynamic behaviour of aircraft and associated systems in the design and development stage. Problems on stability performance, and safety of aircraft and autopilots will also be studied and the computer will be linked to a flight simulator cockpit to enable pilot assessment of handling characteris tics to be made. The PACE 231-R may also be linked to adjacent rigs, so that actual hardware such as actuators and power controls can be included in the loop. Vickers-Armstrongs (Aircraft) already use a PACE 231-R in the study of naviga tional and stability problems connected with the TSR-2 and its internal systems. In addition, the company has ordered a TR-10 analogue computer to investigate conventional aerodynamic problems asso ciated with the VC10 and the BAC One- Eleven. It may also, it is stated, be used to study dynamics problems connected with the TSR.2. France SIPA's Espace Seats A new type of aircraft seat, called Espace, has been produced by SIPA (Societe Industricile Pour l'Aeronautique), 178 Avenue de Neuilly, Neuilly-sur-Seine, for Air France and is being used by that company and Finnair. SIPA, who specialize in commer cial aircraft seating, state that 12,000 of their seats are now in service in Caraveiles and Boeing 707s of 15 international airlines.
