Chevaliers du M^rite Maritime ^Mi-ERS OF 22 SQN who took part in the rescue of crew members from the French •rawler Jeanne Gougy, off Land's End in November last year, last week received the Croix de Chevalier du Merite Maritime from the French Government. The awards *ere made by M L. M. le Bideau, French C °nsul-General at Southampton, at the University of Southampton on Monday of last week. Captain of the helicopter, which operated from RAF Chivenor, was Fit Lt J. T. Egginton; navigator, Fit Lt J. L. N. Canham; and winch-man, Fit Sgt Eric Smith, who was subsequently awarded the George Medal (Flight International, March 14) for "courage, devotion to duty and utter disregard for his own personal safety." HMAS "Melbourne" Record A ROYAL AUSTRALIAN NAVY ASW Gannet crew—Lts R. E. Gill (pilot), A. E. John son and A. G. Davies-Graham—recently made the 20,000th deck landing on the RAN flagship HMAS Melbourne. There has been no injury or fatality in the 20,000 landings, 25 per cent of which were made at night. Melbourne reached another milestone towards the end of last year when she recorded her 10,000th catapult launching. 249*s Sassoon Trophy THE SASSOON TROPHY for the best combined results in the annual NEAF bombing and navigation competition has been won by 249 Sqn, based at RAF Akrotiri, Cyprus, and commanded by Sqn Ldr J. Ewan. Runners-up were 6 Sqn, commanded by Sqn Ldr C. F. Pickard. Guest competitors were 5 Sqn, Royal Rhodesian Air Force, commanded by Sqn Ldr N. Kemsley; and a Rhodesian crew captained by Fit Lt J. F. du Rand achieved best individual results in the medium bombing category. CFS 1963 Reunion CENTRAL FLYING SCHOOL ASSOCIATION members to a total of 140 attended the association's annual reunion dinner in the officers' mess, RAF Little Rissington, on July 12. They included the former CAS, Marshal of the RAF Sir Dermot Boyle; the AOC-in-C Flying Training Command, Air Marshal Sir Augustus Walker; and the present CFS Commandant, Air Cdre H. Bird-Wilson. Air Marshal Sir Richard Atcherley presided and among guests of honour were the Air Minister, Mr Hugh Fraser; the CAS, Marshal of the RAF Sir Thomas Pike; the Flag Officer Flying Training, Rear Admiral P. D. Gick; and the managing director of Folland Aircraft Ltd, Mr D. G. Brade. THE DUCHESS OF GLOUCESTER visited the OCTU at RAF Jurby, Isle of Man, last Thursday to act as Reviewing Officer at the passing-out parade of newly commis sioned RAF and WRAF officers. SIR JOHN HUNT, leader of the 1953 Everest Expedition and currently director of the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme, is to be reviewing officer at the graduation parade of 96 Entry of aircraft apprentices at RAF Halton on July 31. AIR CDRE WILFRED P. GOUIN, MBE, CD, has been appointed Air Member of the Canadian Joint Staff in London. A mechanical engineer, he first went to the UK before the war, holding an appointment at RAE Farnborough before joining the RCAF in August 1940. A NEW MARCH FOR THE FLEET AIR ARM— Flying Stations—had its first public per formance recently at the Royal Tourna ment at Earls Court. Composer is Capt F. Stovin-Bradford, Chief of Staff to the Flag Officer Air (Home), Vice-Admiral Sir John Hamilton. OVER 40 YEARS' RAF SERVICE distinguished the career of Air Cdre C. T. Jackaman, OBE, who retired recently from his last appoint ment, as Senior Technical Staff Officer, RAF Germany. He had joined as a boy entrant in September 1922, went up through the ranks and was commissioned in August 1939. A signals specialist, he served in the Middle East during the war, then held posts at SHAPE and with AAFCE. He became an air commodore in July 1960.
